I met him some

years ago for the first time, when I walked into that scarcely lighted room

where a QTS freestyle and recording session was just about to begin. He

suprisingly sat there alone, kind of eluding the light, his arms folded, not

giving any impression of waiting for something.

- Ha, like origami., I thought.

No signs of taciturnity, just other forms of comunication. The record player

was on, playing Cannonball Adderleys Autumn Leaves. Something Else. The

track just reached that part, nearly at the end, where Hank Jones just makes

the leaves fall, piano sounds, nameless minor theme. His eyes were half way

closed, his head was going with Blakeys rhythm. As recently as Miles

trumpet sound came out of the silence one minute later he seemed to notice

me for the first time.
