The Wailin’ Canes- A musical alliance of 3 friends who joined forces to take over the world through honest, un-compromised rock n’ roll.

With the completion of their new self-titled EP, the Wailin’ Canes have honed a style of writing and performing that has helped break open the boundaries of the budding Nashville rock scene. On tracks like “Still”, with its melancholy, chugging groove, you can hear the years the guys have spent touring and the roller coaster of experiences that accompany it. Other songs like “Rolling Stone” and “Superbadd” make apparent the southern influences that come from a group birthed from Nashville’s smoky, whiskey-drenched bar scene.

Although they are only in their 20s, the members of the Wailin’ Canes have very diverse musical experiences and backgrounds that define the character of the band. To say music comes naturally to bassist/singer Kyle Whalum would be a huge understatement. With his father and grandfather both internationally acclaimed jazz musicians, Kyle soon discovered his own talents for music as well as visual art at an early age. After flirting with aspirations of being a professional animator, he decided to move his full-time focus to the bass while still young. Through high school he played in a popular local heavy metal band while building his jazz chops at the same time. After high school, he attended Belmont University where he met Tyler and Justin while playing in a popular college rock group.

Guitarist/singer Tyler Cain’s love affair with music began shortly after finding his father’s dusty old acoustic guitar on the top a bookshelf in his childhood home in Southeastern Virginia. A few years later, at the age of 14, he joined a local country rock band and cut his teeth playing clubs and bars. Many club and festival shows later, at the age of 18, he moved to Nashville to pursue music further. He soon met Kyle and Justin. From this point, it would still be a few years before the Wailin’ Canes came together, but the guys played music together in various different studio and live projects before becoming a band.

Drummer/singer Justin Meeks is the rock of the Wailin’ Canes. With his father a bassist and his mother a singer, Justin was submerged in a wide variety of music from his childhood in North Carolina. Upon his move to Nashville, Justin also attended Belmont where he studied music performance. Over the period of years that followed, his talents took him all over the world as he played drums for various Nashville-based groups. He even worked for a while as an audio tech on some of the biggest tours out of Nashville, teaching him the realities of a life on the road.

With the release of their new EP, be on the lookout for the Wailin’ Canes to be playing a venue near you soon. If you can handle loud, real, uncontrived rock music, then this message is for you.
