The new album from THETA, Tone Poems for Sad Times coming March 1, 2005 from the fine folks at Translation Loss.

"This Lawrence sextet has a real knack for inserting keyboard textures and crunchy guitars into songs rife with odd time signatures and experimental arrangements." - LAWRENCE.com

"With atmospheric guitar lines and elongated vocals dripping with emotion, [Theta] seem to sample freely from all genres and arrive in a new, sparsely inhabited one." - TOOMUCHROCK.com

Sometimes you are meant to make music - born for it, if you will. Such is the case for Lawrence, KS-based rock sextet THETA. Originally coming together over a decade ago under the eponym CAUSTIC SODA (Eric Graves/guitar, Cory White/drums and Mike Quillin/bass and vocals), each of the members were barely in middle school. The trio was instantly prolific, recording two EPs and a full-length record before they had even made it to high school.

After a brief hiatus the band regrouped, bringing drummer JJ Willems into the fold while White made the switch to guitar. The freshly expanded lineup dubbed themselves THETA and entered Sixth Sense Studios in the summer of 1998 to record what would become the band's self-titled debut EP. Over the next few years the band would come to build a solid following through their penchant for creating complex pop music and their entrancing live performances.

Soon, the addition of full-time electronics and keys mad scientist Torin Andersen enabled the band to more readily take their music to the masses, performing with the likes of the CASKET LOTTERY, HOUSTON, DIRTNAP, 90 DAY MEN, COALESCE, LAFAYETTE and TRISTEZA. 2001 brought the release of a new demo consisting of an early home recording of "Continuum" as well as a handful of live tracks, appropriately titled Three Live, One Home.

In April of 2002, THETA contributed a live recording of "Reanimation" to the classic compilation series Loaded In Lawrence: Live at the Bottleneck. The Loaded." appearance marked the addition of bassist Esteban Caracciolo, leaving Quillin space to concentrate more fully on his unique vocal style in the live setting. Shortly after, drum prodigy Adam Mitchell also joined the THETA family.

In the fall of that year THETA entered Red House Studios in Eudora, KS with producer Ed Rose (the GET UP KIDS, ULTIMATE FAKEBOOK, SMALL BROWN BIKE) to begin work on the ambitious 5 song, 30 minute mini CD, Tone Poems for Sad Times.

On Tone Poems for Sad Times, THETA bring their eclectic mix of thick rock riffage and complex pop sensibilities to blend perfectly with enveloping dual guitar textures, spatial electronic ambience and angelic, emotive vocals. Eerie passages melt seamlessly into explosions of anthemic realizations; soothing melodic lines collide with powerful rock triumph. THETA transcend the boundaries of rock music, taking the listener on an odyssey of breathtaking heights and astounding horizons.

"These songs are so thoroughly strong.Tone Poems for Sad Times is achingly beautiful." - DECOYMUSIC.com
