FROM THE TULSA WORLD 2006

Zach Wiser, the singer for the local buzz band The Secret Post, doesn't understand why people want to fight his band. The Secret Post is a dark and sensual mix of New Wave restraint and rock excess. Wiser isn't in a metal band. His music isn't aggressive. His lyrics are about making sweet love and depression. The band members are skinny, wear eyeliner and dress in black. It's not music you'd expect to cause a brawl. Wiser doesn't say anything provocative when he performs. He sings standing behind the microphone with his hair pulled back from his face and a bandana around his head, sometimes smoking a cigarette. Some of his band stare at the floor as they play. Nevertheless, Wiser - a gangly, tall and long haired Tulsa man - knocked a guy out following the band's debut last month at the Tulsa Eagle, 1338 E. Third St. He was helping load gear up and the guy began harassing them, the group said. Wiser's hired security had already left for the night. The group's haraunger was literally asking for it, so Wiser became the man's personal genie. Reportedly, a bell was rung. The Secret Post's second show was Halloween night at the Mooch and Burn, a dark and smokey club down the street from the Cain's Ballroom. A staggering drunk in the audience spent a quarter of the show heckling the bassist, known as "Tap". Wiser eventually motioned security over to keep the drunk back. Later, a girl in the audience tried to put out a cigarette on the offender's head. Wiser, nicknamed "DayRuiner," doesn't know where it comes from. "I want people to have a good time and come out and smile," Wiser said. Wiser, 28, has been a musician since he was a teenager. He went to high school in Tulsa. He moved to Palm Springs, Calif., where he started a rock band, WiseMan. He quit the band and returned to Tulsa to be closer to his son. The Secret Post, which began as an idea while he was in WiseMan, became his outlet for musical influences that he was too embarrassed to show when he was a teenager. Wiser worships The Cure. He also loves The Damned, Pink Floyd and the New York Dolls. "I pretty much kept it under wraps until I was 18, you know, because everyone you know thinks your a homo if you like New Order, the Cure, and Depeche ModeAnd, you care about that stuff when your younger, you know. Not everybody does, but I did because I was trying to get laid." He started The Secret Post with an odd mix of musicians from the area. Rhythm guitarist Heath Crofut works for a television station. Wiser met the keyboardist, whose nickname is "Hardware" at the Mercury Lounge. The drummer, "Nicoli" is Wiser's younger brother, formerly with the local punk band, the Straight Jackits, while the enigmatic lead guitarist, who goes by "Aleks," claims he was in the 1980's glam rock band Hanoi Rocks. The sextet makes an interesting mix. The band's music, with erotis songs such as "Eyelashes" and "Mouth," struts with a driving rhythm section and subdued guitars. The result is a desolate sound that complements Wiser's guilt-ridden lyrics spawned from his dark depression and drug abuse. Wiser doesn't want the band to play many shows. He wants to keep a buzz. He's done it. Tulsa's music scene is buzzing about The Secret Post. It played Tuesday, opening for Attrition at the Tulsa Eagle, minus the keyboard player who never showed.

"THE SECRET POST

Sometimes, when bands are dark, they’re really, really dark. Admittedly, drugging, fighting and irresponsibility nearly totalled this up-and-coming gothic post-punk act. It resurrects itself on its 2-year anniversary with 22 new songs bubbling in its cauldron of sullen-yet-danceable rock, performed at the first venue it ever played.

10 p.m. Monday, The Tulsa Eagle, 1338 E. Third St., $3 cover. "

FROM THE URBAN TULSA:Exposing the Secret in our 2006 year-end issue, Urban Tulsa Weekly named The Secret Post the "Best New Band You've Never Heard Of" and we still stand by our pick. Yes, we caught wind of this band early and so did a number of our loyal and discriminating UTW readers, but the public at large has yet to catch on. Maybe NewVo will help grab their attention. What makes The Secret Post so cool? For starters, when was the last time you heard a goth-rock band, in the vein of the Cure, Bauhaus or Joy Division come out of little ol' Tulsa -- and a good one at that? Of course, that's not all these guys have going on -- there are hints of Bowie, Lou Reed and even a little Southern Death Cult hovering in the background and it all comes together in a way that makes goth-rock palatable and cool again. Then there's the mystery factor. As the band keeps itself shrouded in secrecy (fronted by "Dayruiner" and backed by "Tap" on bass, "The Vest" and "The Myth" on guitar and Nicoli on drums), the group puts on its game face and never lets its guard down unless you've reached the "inner circle." Even then, who knows how much you can separate the truth from the tale. The truth of the matter is there's a degree to which the anonymity only adds to the coolness of the band. Upon first encountering Dayruiner and his crew, you may just find yourself wondering aloud what you're witnessing. Would anybody truly be so audacious as to revive full-on Goth rock? Is this band for real, or is it just an elaborate hoax? When The Secret Post brings dark romanticism back for the 21st century and the music is this good, do we really care? Prepare to be ruined - The Secret Post is coming for you. GARY HIZER

Cited in UTW's 2006 retrospective as "The Best New Band You've Never Heard Of," The Secret Post is equal doses of vintage and contemporary, indie, Goth, dance and rock'n'roll. Older music fans who long for the glory days of The Cure, Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy will love them, and emo kids who don't really know the roots of their favorite bands and have only heard stories of the near-legendary "IKON" will likely find a new band to love as well.

When was the last time you really embraced the Goth side? The Secret Post has finally arrived, and we'll only see more of the band in the future. Tulsa's new dark-romantics are sexy, sultry and imminently danceable, and now's the time to catch the buzz.GARY HIZER
