While the history of the pickle stretches so far back into the mists of time that no one is certain of its origins, this feisty treat has been integral to countless lives across many cultures—from Roman emperors to bar room brawlers. Here is but one interesting anecdote selected randomly from the briny jar of pickle history: Amerigo Vespucci, aside from being a map-loving hobbyist and aspiring explorer, was actually a pickle peddler in Seville, Spain. He supplied ships with pickled vegetables to prevent sailors from getting scurvy on long voyages. When Christopher Columbus stumbled upon what Europeans like to call "the New World," he subsequently named two entire continents after his pickler friend back home. It is in this same spirit of adventure, entrepreneurial chutzpah, and a lust for world conquest, that I introduce to you: Perkins Pickles.

Perkins Pickles is a Detroit-based, homegrown, privately run label offering a unique formula recipe of deliciously spicy spears. Founder and Chief Pickler, Tom Perkins, saw mediocrity in the marketplace—both in terms of product and brand—and decided to take a stand. Clearly marking his territory, the Perkins Pickles identity, packaging, and overall state of mind were borne of a (slightly?) tongue-in-cheek ambition of world dominance mixed with true DIY ethics. If you love pickles, but no one's making them the way you like, you just have to make them yourself. And this is what he did.
