On Christmas Day nineteen years ago, Matthew James was given what turned out to be the best gift he'd ever receive: a Play-By-Numbers keyboard. He was immediately entranced with his first love, and as his affection for music grew, so did his ability to play and create it through seven different instruments. His love for music became a part of him, a way of seeing, thinking, and speaking. Though he had ambitions to share his talents with the world, after several attempts proved fruitless, he surrendered to the inevitable and began to pursue other goals. He did not just leave music; he abandoned it entirely, selling most of his musical possessions with no intention of ever returning.

After Matthew's self-ascribed defeat in the music industry, his motivation to play again was resurrected when he at last found a cohesive line-up and was able to truly express his vision, bestowing a sense of re-birth, and begetting the name Third Day Rising. For the band as a whole, the name reflects renewed determination to express their musical passions on a professional level.

Despite the uplifting metaphor bound to the name, the music comes from a dark, weary place. Lyrically it is bleak, emotional, and filled with vexations. Rare to most music groups, Third Day Rising boasts three guitarists, whose unique musical contributions offer a strong variety between them, creating a unified and provoking blend and balanced with equally deliberative bass and drums patterns. This, fused with upbeat melodies bending and lifting the dejected lyrics creates it’s own genre of "gloom pop".

In February of 2009, their first EP "In the Bedroom" was released. The EP, containing four songs, is like a journal entry, written and recorded by Matthew in his bedroom, a translation of emotions and the tragedies of existence into an aural portrait. June 20th, Third Day Rising will release their EP, “In the Bedroom” headlining the Beat Kitchen in Chicago, 2100 West Belmont, with support artists Ignition Theory, and Andrew Rosborough.

After years of aspirations and tireless efforts, Third Day Rising represents the last chance. It is the birth of new promises, renewal of the old, and the final attempt to fulfill them. Everything has come down to this and those who watch will bear witness to either their ascent, or their downfall.
