The core of The Non-Commissioned Officers consists of two siblings from Nashville, TN: Eric and Jordan Lehning. The brothers starred in MAKE-OUT with VIOLENCE, a movie directed by the Deagol Brothers and produced by Limerent Pictures. The film is a genre-bending tale of a boy trying to fulfill his unrequited love for a girl who has risen from the dead.
Eric and Jordan played a pivotal role in the forty-four song, double-disc soundtrack for the film. Between the two of them, they wrote and performed the vast majority of the songs appearing on the over two-hour soundtrack. Jordan composed and arranged the score, and Eric is the fervent front man. Since it's official release in 2009, Jordan, once a touring guitarist for the band, graduated to a full-time producer/engineer who plans to produce and write songs for The Non-Comms future studio efforts.
The soundtrack truly acts as an anchor for the film's overall emotionalism, and the album's finest moments assemble a stand-alone full-length album melding melancholy heartbreak and coming of age euphoria; it's a bona fide statement from the brothers, who pooled their imaginations, talents and resources to weave musical threads into an infectious and enigmatic fabric.
Like the plot of MAKE-OUT with VIOLENCE, the soundtrack seeks to find something organic in the unnatural, with soaring guitar licks wrapped inside a bed of synth-soaked melodies. Songs like "Just North," "Frozen Tongue," "No Means No," "Sweet Eleanor" and "Turn Me Down And Fade Me Out" showcase the balance between moody Eno- esque production and sing-a-long pop sensibility.
While part of the Non-Commissioned Officers' mystique stems from their ability to deliver mind-bending compositions and lush pop-infused allure in a city known for the sheen of the synthetic country music hit, ultimately the band's hometown has little relevance. These songs are timeless, out-of-nowhere gems waiting to be discovered and cherished for traversing between deft arrangements and infinite energy.
Factory 25 released a limited edition MAKE-OUT with VIOLENCE DVD/Non- Commissioned Officers vinyl combo on Tuesday, Oct. 26. Rough Trade/Make Mine released an EP consisting of select tracks from the MAKE-OUT with VIOLENCE soundtrack on Oct. 19, 2009.
