Straight out of the GTA’s urban sprawl, The Next Best Thing brings a fresh new sound to a land that seems lately to breed both redundancy and mediocrity. Since 1999, The Next Best Thing have been captivating audiences with their infectious grooves and vibe. Their sound is deeply rooted in the traditions of Dub, Reggae and Hip Hop and is more reminiscent of the Trench town jump-ups of a by gone era than that of five youth from suburban Toronto. However, while heavily influenced by the Roots music of a generation past, The Next Best Thing do not hand out a simple regurgitation of the same old sound. They have managed to infuse the energy, life experience, and cultural awareness of their time into a musical genre already steeped in a history of social relevance. This, coupled with the fact that the band has showed a dynamic progression throughout their three independent releases, has helped The Next Best thing to recruit a growing legion of loyal and excited fans.

The Next Best Thing also take a great deal of pride in their strong “Do It Yourself” work ethic and professionalism. 1999’s Skattack, 2004’s Suburban Dub Syndicate and their most recent release, The Working Machine, were all recorded, mixed, and released independently and all three sold out of their initial runs. Suburban Dub Syndicate and The Working Machine are now fast approaching sales of 1000 and 1500 copies respectively. The band has racked up an impressive 650 plus show dates at some of the country’s best venues and festivals in an effort to promote their records and sound. The Next Best thing has also had the pleasure of sharing the stage with the likes of The Slackers, Bedouin Soundclash, Jacksoul, Badfish, Barrington Levy, The Planet Smashers and Tomi Swick.

To this day, The Next Best Thing continues to spread their addictive sound throughout the nation inciting dance and good vibrations everywhere they go. People come out in droves to take part in a show atmosphere that is truly unique to the TNBT experience. See them once, and you’ll be pondering the same question that all those before you have asked. Could it be that they really are The Next Best Thing?
