Hip-hop is as welcoming as it is divisive. Artists and fans alike are constantly drawing lines to a genre that keeps coming up with new labels. Each new sub-genre establishes a new type of elitist, each arguing the state of hip-hop and from time to time these elitists “discover” an artist who’s here to “save us all”.

Chicago emcee Rita J is not here to salvage hip-hop from the MTV/BET ruins. She is here to simply speak her mind and remind you what good music sounds like. Rita J’s laid-back flow delivers swagger and insight with “Ms. Jackson”. DJ Roper (who recently released the critically acclaimed From the Soul: A Tribute to Pete Rock & DJ Spinna) builds the ideal project that not only to makes your head nod, but to reminds you that at the end of the day music can be an escape, it can be thought provoking, or it can be just simply good music.

The Landlords.

Roper and Furlee are The Landlords, born and raised in Chicago. Roper had always been into music. He was a big fan of 2pac, Bone Thugs, Warren G, E40, and whatever good commercial rap that was around at the time. Around 1995, Furlee introduced Roper to some classic tapes by The Fugees, Beatnuts, and Wu-Tang. With a new found love in hiphop, Furlee and Roper created a little crew and began writing their own music. Around 1997, The Landlords began work on their first solo album when they linked with CH Productions and DJ Cache22 and recorded their first song, "Iron Curton" with Omega.

Around the same time, Roper began djing at a local radio station that was run at Loyola University; 88.7fm TheHipHopProject, hosted by Brotha El and Ish. A highschool friend, CosmRoks, introduced Roper to the show and shortly became a regular. Through the radio station, Roper met MANY different artists like Juice, Talib, MoleMen, Cali Agents, Grand Master Caz, and OverFlo. Roper grew a close bond with OverFlo and began to work on some new music. Before they knew it, The Landlords, with the help of OverFlo and Layman, recorded a 9 song EP entittled "Rent’s Due".

With "Rent’s Due" gaining critically acclaimed success, it still lacked the sales needed to break even. In the mean time, The Landlords began working on an independent video for the smash single, "Kinkle Epidemik", an honest and brutal look into the lives of high school "nerds" on the verge of a social and mental breakdown. The Landlords were the first artists in Chicago to independently record, edit, and distribute their own music video.

3 years later, The Landlords are ready to bring shame to the term Sophomore Slump with their next LP, "5-Day Notice", now linked with ForDaFresh Records. With production help from OverFlo, MeatyOgre, Yoda, Mixx Massacre, The Molemen, Furlee, and Madd Crates, the duo have such a diverse sound that it’s hard to coin a signature sound. Along with some additional help from Verbal, and Chicago’s legendary Akbar, the Landlords look to make this album something to remember.
