Once there was a grown man who lived in a closet.
Well, it wasn't a real closet. He only used the closet as a secret entrance to his underground lair of steam tunnels where he was able to pursue his interests in math and science with no interruption from the outside world.
And he wasn't a real man, only a character in the 80's teen movie "Real Genius."
What is real is that more than 20 years after the film was released, a band in Denver would name themselves after this memorable character. His name was Hollyfeld. Lazlo Hollyfeld.
Lazlo's Denver descendants, calling themselves The Hollyfelds, departed from the musical style of the 80's film from where they took their name, and instead went for a more traditional sound. The Hollyfelds take classic country, rock, and pop, put it in a pot, add a touch of folk and bluegrass, and baby, they got a stew going. It is music that, as Westword magazine puts it, "splits the difference between alt-country and the genre's mainstream," and contains "just enough of the whiskey and heartache that makes great country music."
The Hollyfelds (henceforth referred to as "we" or "our") started with a marriage and then moved on to other instances of destiny. How we all came together is pretty boring. Husband and wife musicians.blah blah blah.met boy and girl musicians.blah blah blah.remembered poker buddy musician.bob loblaw.band formed. In May of 2006 we officially formed and quickly recorded our EP, File Under 'H' For Toy. Soon after we started playing shows around Colorado, mainly in the Denver area, but we also rocked Laporte pretty hard.
Then, in October of 2007 we trekked to the Ohio studio of producer Ric Hordinski to record our debut full length. Grammy nominated Hordinski, best known for his work with artists such as Over the Rhine, Victoria Williams, Robbie Fulks and David Wilcox, recorded and produced the album entitled Saratoga, which was released in Feb of 2008 to very favorable responses. Wildy's World blog proclaimed the album to be one of the top releases of 2008, saying it was "one of the finest alt-country albums of the past 10 years. . .a musician's dream." Our hometown arts weekly, Westword, awarded us with the 2008 music showcase award in the "Country/ Alt-country" category, as well as enthusing: "Throughout the album, the deft, soulful musicianship of all five Hollyfelds stand out, but it's Eryn's and Kate's stunning harmonies that make Saratoga an utterly delightful listen. . ."
In the spring of 2009 we release a 5 song EP entitled Black Heart Blue. We recorded in Denver, returning to Brian Hunter at Mousetrap Studios, who recorded File Under 'H' For Toy. After recording, the tracks were mixed and mastered by Masaki (known for his work with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club) in his San Francisco area studio. The album was released to further critical response, resulting in another Westword Music Showcase award, and a "Best of Denver" award from Westword for "Best Band Playing Country Music the Way It Was Meant To Be Played."
Responses such as these led to us playing with a number of respected artists such as: The Be Good Tanyas, Split Lip Rayfield, Drag The River, The Eli Young Band, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, The Railbenders, and Bobby Bare Jr., as well as to tour dates in eleven western states.
Most recently, the summer of 2010 saw the release of Lo Bueno, Lo Malo, Lo Feo, a 2 song EP which we pressed on vinyl records (available at shows), and we have made available as MP3 downloads. Following this release, we embarked on a tour which took us to the West Coast and back. The summer of 2010 also saw us being awarded our 3rd Westword Music Showcase award in the "country/alt-country" category, as well as placing in the top ten of the Denver Post's annual UMS music critics poll. In the near future, we are excited about upcoming shows with the likes of Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles, and starting work on a new full length release.
However, our main goal continues to be getting people to pronounce and spell our beautiful name correctly. Just remember.there is no "i" in "team" or in "Hollyfelds," but there ARE three "L's".
THANK YOU FOR CHECKING OUT THE HOLLYFELDS! WE APPRECIATE IT!
