"The Tuscon, AZ band played a brilliant version of danceable garage rock re-engineered for the noise sect. Had the The Black Keys been aborted on the bathroom floor of CBGBs, the discarded fetal matter might have grown-up to be The Fuckin' Kennies. There was a psychobilly / rockabilly characteristic, but I'll tread lightly now because I'm venturing into a territory I don't know much about. But I know this: the crunch, plug, jangle-bang, and pow coming out of the PA at The Silverlake Lounge until nearly 1am was utterly electrifying. Even when the band paused to banter and adjust instruments, the set never seemed to stop.



Sweat, beer, sex, and joy filled the air. It was the sort of thing you hope gets video recorded so in thirty years some teenaged kid will look at the tape and go "Damn, I wish I could have been alive then." The 10 or so people who stayed couldn't stop dancing at the front of the stage and I don't doubt for a minute that what might have been the smallest crowd on the first residency night of the month in fact saw the very best musical offering available in a ten mile radius. It pays to dig down for your music.



As for the CD. the lo-fi recordings show a more clear-cut punk influence than the set I saw live. It is equally wonderful.



The Fuckin' Kennies closed with a song named after themselves, and then the band lobbied for its own encore. When it got one, front man Kenny Alden (by this point clad only in sticky tighty-whities) played for about 15 seconds before handing off instrument duties to a friend so he could walk to the bar. That, Classical Geek Thespians, is fucking rock n' roll."
