You can probably guess that the Five Maseratis have heard of the Beatles and
maybe come across a Cars best-of in the bargain tape bin. Or if we wanted
to be obscure about it we could change that to the Merseybeats and 20/20,
but this isn't a record review it's a bio.The Five Maseratis are a band from
Arlington, VA, home of the indie-pop boom of the nineties and surrogate
parent to political rock, all of which has nothing to do with our boys: Matt
Kelly, Jorge Pezzimenti, Jon Darby, and Rob Steward. You know the drill,
four guys in their twenties who look like they work in a record store or
teach guitar lessons cause, well, they do. They got together at the end of
2000 in their basement, splitting their time between practicing, recording,
and a Gunsmoke arcade game. Songs were written, shows were booked, and
people kept coming back for more. One night they opened for Leif Garrett,
which was.not so good. After countless hours of recording on 4 tracks, 8
tracks, and boom boxes, they pinched their pennies and headed into Inner Ear
Studios with Don Zientara. Six songs in ten hours and they had their first
EP, which pretty much brings us up to speed. Currently, the boys are writing
songs, playing shows, and the girls keep swooning, so life is good. This
weekend they'll probably be in the next room playing while you're in the bar
wondering, "Am I drunk, or is this the best band in the world?" Well let's
just be modest for a second and say the answer lies somewhere in between.
