The Big Bad

Recordings By Mike Usinger

Publish Date: April 26, 2007

Middle of the Night (Independent)

In the spirit of old-school punk, the three members of East Vancouver's the Big Bad no doubt see themselves as equals. Still, the trio has an underground star in waiting on the uneven but scrappy Middle of the Night, a record that rises above its limitations on the back of frontwoman Margitta Ziercke. As the band's guitarist, she's not going to make anyone forget Tom Morello or that Carrot Top look-alike from My Chemical Romance. But as the trio's singer, Ziercke is a fucking powerhouse, her raspy Midwestern-sounding drawl placing her somewhere between Brody Dalle and Courtney Love before she went all Tinseltown with Celebrity Skin. The stuttering "God Damn Yeah" manages the near-impossible task of making punk rock sexy, while "No One Gets Hurt" is the kind of bulldozer that leads to Friday-night mosh-pit injuries at the Cobalt. Drummer Geoffrey Stratton and bassist Mikey B hold their own on Middle of the Night, but what makes them lucky is that they've got a full-fledged punk-rock tiger at the mike. So even though the songs aren't always there on this five-song outing, you can't help but feel that the Big Bad is about to arrive.
