An unsuspecting genre is gaining new ground in the South Rock-governed city of Cebu: Electronica. Electronica has never been quite popular in this area of the Philippines, with only a select group of aficionados actually spreading the digital sound.



Michael Tesch (aka Midi OK!) and Chad Manzo (aka Techisoba) released their take on the electronica sound of the south. It all started when the music scene got too predictable, so both individuals had to do something that is hardly even done where they are from. Thus, the birth of filler music or filler electronica.



What is filler music? Filler music is what you hear before a band sets up on stage, or the in-betweener music that is playing in the background when a band is setting up on stage. If you ask them if this is necessary, yes it is. It's a change from when bands set up having to forcefully listen to Britney Spears so wrongfully remixed with Korn's "Got The Life".



Their beats, a variety of tweaks, bells and whistles, are perhaps closely associated to the likings of international artists such as UNKLE, Aphex Twin and Photek. They do, however, manage to keep their musical preferences separate. Midi OK! has a taste for Digital Hard Core (DHC, the most obvious example in the forms of Alec Empire and EC8OR). Techisoba, on the other hand, has taken a slightly lighter approach that leans towards a mix of Jap-oriented dance music and future Hip Hop greats like DJ Krush, DJ Shadow and Towa Tei.



Together, the two have managed to survive their music through an ironically high number of rock gigs. Their respect for the rock industry has had them play in between band sets, making them the first and only original electronica act that have taken the reputation as gig fillers. Not to be mistaken for your average spinner, Techisoba and Midi OK! do most of their beat formations in the comfort of their own homes, on computers. Today, they are busy translating all that programming into actual performance, working hard to translate what they have written onto different electronic-related instruments.



For something that is highly unlikely to cause a change in rock and roll history, Techisoba and Midi OK! are probably the most rock and roll outfit to surprise the local scene thus far. Keep an ear out for these block-rocking beats.
