Syndicate: Ready to make history again

“If you ask me about my life, I won't tell you shit,” asserts hip-hop artist Syndicate Villain (Syndicate). “But if I get into the booth and make a song, I'll tell you everything. I'm more personal when I record than when I'm speaking to you.”

Such is the premise behind the Vancouver-based, Western Canadian Music Awards nominee and premiere Persian rapper's sophomore effort Can't Sleep The Clown Will Eat Me (Universal/Fontana North). Three years in the making, this monumental affair is nothing less than a sordid tell-all account of Syndicate's life.

Blazing trails and redefining hip-hop with his astonishing debut effort Army Of One, Syndicate has returned to outshine even his own high watermark with sophomore opus Can't Sleep The Clown Will Eat Me. A compelling document of how one man has faced decadence, debauchery and almost death, living to tell the tale through his cathartic, powerful and awe-inspiring second effort, the release not only steps-up his already impressive calibre of musicianship but finds the storied artist surpassing some very serious demons.

“The past few years almost destroyed me because of rampant drug use. This album is a testament to that,” Syndicate reveals. “I was in and out of hospitals multiple times in the span of weeks. There are points in my life I don't even recall. I have no memory of them. It was a hard time that I've managed to surpass and this album is a metaphor to symbolize that time: when I was going through a lot and would rarely sleep. I used recording this album as therapy. It helped me out personally and it's an incredibly positive outlet because of that.”

Supported by his contemporaries who confirm Syndicate's new found sobriety has impacted his music by giving it more pointed direction, muscle and grit, Can't Sleep The Clown Will Eat Me boasts collaborations with the likes of Nate Dogg, Belly, Classified, Moka Only, and Bishop Brigante as well as a solidified reunion with producer J Grout. The debut single “Get Yours” alone proves Syndicate's formidable return, let alone the continuing onslaught of unforgettable, indelibly hooky tunes. “Get Yours” is produced by none other than super producer Pauli Pol (Beyonce, Christina Milian).

In short, though drug abuse threatened to derail Syndicate after a colossal debut album, due to perseverance, strength, talent and the dedicated support of his colleagues, he is back and stronger than ever; ready to assert his position as master hip-hop artist around the globe thanks to the dominance and positive results dubbed Can't Sleep, The Clown Will Eat Me.

“There are a lot of aggressive songs on this album,” grins Syndicate. “It took four years because I wanted the quality to be monumental and I think we've achieved that. Everything has stepped up many notches. It's stronger creatively, my flow is way better, the substance is stronger, the lyricism is better, the beats have more power and there's a strong mix of that aggression and tracks that will appeal to the mainstream. It's got it all.”
