In the fall of 1999, four small-town kids from Snohomish County Washington began ditching class to write music in a basement. By Winter, they were performing original songs at their High School and looking for gigs. Now they enjoy being one of the most attended original local rock bands in the Northwest.
"One of our first shows in the city was at Patti Summers' Jazz Club." says guitarist Kyyle Cort. "It was a basement level room at Pike Place Market."
"We were unloading our amps and looking across the street at The Showbox Theater." adds drummer Mike Bissell, whose father is a musician and helped raise the band in its infancy. "Maybe we'll get to play there someday."
Superfekta, now coined by its peers "The Party Boys of Rock", have since headlined sold-out shows on two corners of that world famous intersection at The Showbox Theater and The Hard Rock Cafe.
Lead singer, Ryan Drake, claims that it didn't happen overnight. "It took years of hard work to make a name for ourselves in the Seattle club scene. The cool thing is that we can only grow from here."
"It all comes back to the 'Tribe' of fans we have in our hometown," explains the multi-instrumentalist Matt "Matty T" Thompson, who took over for Kristofer Cort on bass in the Fall of 2008. "[The fans] are the reason we are successful."
The foursome broke Ace's Casino's attendance record in 2010 and in 2011, broke new ground by becoming the first original local band to headline Tulalip Casino & Resort, also shattering their attendance record.
"Its all about having a good time. We have so many loyals because we don't cast ourselves as a 'type' and our music appeals to people of all ages." says Drake.
In 2009, they hit the clubs hard to promote their very own music festival "Superfekta-Fest" which was an end of Summer success to raise money for a sophomore studio effort.
Superfekta has independently released two full-length studio albums, Something To Play With (2004) and Decade Past (2009) which have both enjoyed generous radio play at College stations and Seattle Market commercial stations as well as internet and satellite radio
Filling up clubs over the years has also afforded them opportunities to reach new fans in the festival crowds. They've played Aquafest, Tastin' & Racin' Festival, Evergreen Speedway, Mill Creek Festival, Emerald Downs, Strutzfest and Evergreen State Fair all in a matter of a year and don't plan on stopping there.
2011 proved to be pivotal for Superfekta. Co-founder and original bass player, Kristofer Cort, has rejoined the band (Oct 2011) as a second guitar player. Kris says, "I took three years away from music to realign myself. There couldn't be a better time for me to come back. I was overwhelmed by the reception of my first show back with the band. The fans are incredible."
They are more than a band -- they are a "live experience". They take pride in solid musicianship and engaging shows. Superfekta plans to tour the Pacific Northwest in 2012 with intentions to visit Europe the following year.
"We've all been musicians since we were young kids and we've waited our whole lives for this." Drake says. "Kyyle and I have been singing side by side since 1997 and we've been writing songs since we were High School seniors. That comes across at our shows. People can tell we've been doing this for a while."
"There are no egos in Superfekta though," assures Matty T "Its easy for a band with a little recognition to let their heads grow, but when I joined the band I was surprised how in-check these guys were. Everyone knows their role and loves it."
Bissell jokes, "We're just a bunch of band geeks having the time of our lives. We like to compete with the crowd to see who can have the most fun."
These "band geeks" have definitely paid their dues in Seattle and continue to grow. Keep your eyes on Superfekta, 'cause the horses aren't slowing down.
