succubus ('s?kj?b?s) n, pl –bi (-‚ba?). 1 Also called: succuba. a female demon fabled to have sexual intercourse with sleeping men. Compare incubus. 2 any evil demon. [C16: from Medieval Latin, from Late Latin succuba harlot, from Latin succubare to lie beneath, from SUB- + cubare to lie]
In Western medieval legend, a succubus (plural succubi or succubuses) or succuba (plural succubae) is a demon who takes the form of a beautiful human female to seduce men (especially monks) in dreams to have sexual intercourse. They draw energy from the men to sustain themselves, often until the point of exhaustion or death of the victim. From mythology and fantasy, Lilith and the Lilin (Jewish) and Lilitu (Sumerian) are, in redactive Christian fables (folktales not part of official Christian theology), considered succubi.
Our spelling intentionally differs from the usual coz we wanted to be individual…
Now to the history of SUCUBUS:
The band formed in the summer of 2002. Sue and Tamara started the band as a laugh while drunk. Mascha and Johanna were counted in pretty much from the start. And thus we were able to start rehearsing in the autumn of 2002.
Unfortunately, Johanna quit rather soon again. Due to enrolling in art school and subsequently moving she didn't have enough time anymore (…or so she thought).
Our second guitar player also left us quite quickly but we managed to recruit Susi, which had been our plan all along anyway. After some more line-up changes and longer period of being without a drummer, Dave joined SUCUBUS.
So our first serious line-up was as follows:
Sue (vocals), Mascha (guitar), Susi (guitar), Tamara (bass) and Dave (drums)
And so we got busy practising, which was definitely necessary as most of us (except for Dave and Mascha) were completely inexperienced with our instruments. After plenty of rehearsing we had our debut gig in November 2002. Since then we've been touring the stages of this world regularly.
We recorded our first demo CD in the winter of 2004, featuring three songs. Looking back we aren't too satisfied with the result. It probably was too soon. Still, if you're interested in listening, feel free to get in touch with us…
Over the course of 2004 Dave unfortunately was increasingly unable to find the time for SUCUBUS so we ended up looking for somebody to replace him on drums. Luckily we got Johanna to join us once again. Despite her change of location she found the time for rehearsing from now on. Since then we've played with this line-up and are quite happy with the way things have worked out, especially because we're connected in more ways than just playing in a band together. We've all known each other a few years and are friends. So this way gives us the opportunity to drive to all kinds of places together, play there, drink together and party till dawn. And since we're a band, it doesn't cost us anything. Isn't that great?
We recorded another four songs in the winter of 2006. We've released them under the title of "Smash the Boredom" and are really satisfied this time. The CD can be ordered directly from us for 3 euros (plus postage). All strictly according to DIY principles, of course.
We're currently working on a range of SUCUBUS clothing. Individual second-hand items with SUCUBUS printing are already available for very reasonable prices at our shows.
The current and true SUCUBUS line-up is as follows:
Sue (vocals), Mascha (guitar), Susi (guitar), Tamara (bass) and Johanna (drums)
Until now we've played with: Mad Sin, Vice Squad, Pestpocken, Riot Brigade, Cut My Skin, Rotten Apples, Tombstone Surfers, Rejected Youth, Los Fastidios, Fabulous Disaster, Charmin' Bastards, Obtrusive, Jesus Skins, Gewohnheitstrinker, J'aurais voulu, Rotten Boi!s, Boonaraaas, Argies, Krum, Bums, Bambix to name but a few
