With the constant categorizing of a culture that should not be jarred, its hard for artist to represent themselves and be accepted and appreciated by both “mainstream” and “underground” audiences. Starrs & Murph do this naturally.

Only a few times in Hip Hop have we seen duo’s with this type of dynamic style and polished lyricism. Add the musicianship and ability to write and arrange R&B, Pop, and Dance records, and you’d have a hard time matching this combo’s skill set. Their impeccable chemistry garners them comparisons to other prominent groups like OutKast and RunDMC, but Starrs dispels them stating, “Those guys are Legends idolized by millions, and have accomplished so much. We haven’t done anything yet to warrant those comparisons. We want to carve our name in music as well, so hopefully it’ll hold merit one day.” The humility of the group would have you discredit the fact they’ve been featured in several publications, graced the pages of probably all of your favorite music blogs and websites, been Nominated for multiple Underground Music Awards (including Song of The Year and Winning the Best Rap Duo category), and of course sharing the stage with some of today’s most respected mainstream and underground stars.

What makes them so compelling to most of their fans, is both the honesty and the storytelling angles of their music. As Murph puts it, “Hip Hop is a culture, Rap music is a part of that culture but in the form of writing. A good writer understands that knowledge is sometimes best given in the form of a story or lesson. How many lessons are taught to us as kids thru fictional stories? Its all about how far you’re willing to take it and is the message important enough to create an ideal.” With that said, its understood why no topic seems forced for them. That security in what they believe affords them the comfort to touch any subject matter without feeling as if their supporters will stray. “It sounds cliché, but its really all about being true to yourself, which includes your strengths but also what some might consider your flaws, its all a part of who you are. And not everybody will identify, but most will”, said Starrs.

The passion they have for music and expanding the culture is evident. The talent they possess is heard with each recording. The “integrity meets style” dynamic is displayed by the way they write, dress, and live their lives. Its only a matter of time before Starrs & Murph is doing exactly what the comparisons force them to, carve their own names in this thing we call Music. Merits are on the way.
