SPURS FOR JESUS have been kickin up dust around town since 1994,wreaking havoc from Melbourne to Brisbane & all points in-between, including the Tamworth Country Music Festival, but primarily in their home town of Sydney.
Theyve shared a stage with numerous kindred-spirits, most notably The Supersuckers, Southern Culture On The Skids, Tony Joe White, The Johnnys, Flying Burrito Brothers & in 2003 they embarked on an East Coast tour as backing band for Jason Ringenberg of Nashvilles cowpunk legends Jason & The Scorchers.
A Spurs For Jesus gig never attracts a typical punter & theyre equally at home playing to inner-city hipsters, yobs,
punks, rockers, hillbillys, geeks, freaks, suits & degenerates from all walks of life.
Publicans love them also if not for their music, then at least for the thirsty crowds they bring, & on many an occasion, theyve broken bar-taking records all over town.
6 years after their self-released Repenthouse EP comes their long-awaited debut album Dark Side Of The Saloon on Nonzero Records, comprising of 11 original tunes. As expected, its a little bit country & a little bit rocknroll, but also spiced up with a few surprise flavours such as Rockabilly,
Gospel, Swing, Tex-Mex, Pop, Murder Ballads & even a dose of Spaghetti Western in the mix.
As the title suggests, Dark Side Of The Saloon explores the sinister side of life as Spurs For Jesus dunk their collective heads into the social toilet & pull out a tragic roll-call of themes:Lust, Betrayal, Murder, Sin & Salvation, Eatin & Cheatin, Drinkin & Thinkin, Law-breakin, Alienation, Povertyyou get the picture.
Life through the Spurs looking glass aint all picnics & pony rides, nevertheless, the invitation is extended to all & sundry to saddle up & take a journey to the Dark Side Of The Saloon & wallow in a fistful of tunes guaranteed to put a tear in your beer
