This Hong Kong-born, Vancouver-raised DJ and emerging producer, grew up around music and, having just relocated to London, is today taking great strides to establish herself in the global electronic music scene. Michelle – and her own Soulfunkee brand – are set for big things in 2008 and beyond.
Influenced by her Dad's funk and soul records and her Mum's latin and jazz collection, Michelle would sing and dance on tables in the family home as a child before being lured into British Columbia's sordid rave scene by her older brother … at the tender age of 14.
Exposed to the sounds of trance, breaks and hard house at her first rave party, Michelle embarked on an eager record-buying spree that soon saw her seduced by the soulful, sexy sounds of quality House music. As she explains, the feelings she got while getting down at these underground events set the scene for her full immersion within the music scene.
‘It was also the feeling I got when I was at the raves,’ she explains. ‘We were like puppets to the DJs; they’d play a sick song and we’d go nuts, they’d play a shit song and we’d leave the room.’
‘I wanted to be able to share that feeling, to be able to get people off their feet or just to dance the night away, not worrying about anything.’
Heavily influenced by her brother, himself a DJ, Michelle then cut her teeth behind the decks, quickly gaining a good reputation for her sharp mixing skills and eclectic musical taste.
Some tough decisions were to follow however. Parental pressure to go to university resulted in Michelle commencing a Business Degree and at the same time juggling a diploma course at a private production school. After the stressful school year and receiving her diploma in Audio Production, Michelle took a break and started a full-time job at a corporate company.
A year later in 2005 Michelle returned to College to gain credits to transfer to Berklee College Of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, widely-regarded throughout the industry as the best music school in the world.
Complementing her study with piano lessons for the entry exam, Michelle was all set but, on advice from a close friend and following some soul searching, she made the brave decision to relocate to London, the epicenter of the global House music scene.
Her influences include Miguel Migs, Baby Anne, Kaskade, Joey Negro and other Artists across the Hip Hop, Rock, Pop, Reggae and Jazz spectrums. Her incorporation of all the genres make up the unique “Soulfunkee” sound to capture all music lovers around the world. Michelle is currently putting it to use at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford where she is completing a BA in Music Production.
