Greetings Good People…I’m Sonja Marie

I’ve been writing poetry since I was 10 years old (I have 37 journals to prove it). I’m from Yonkers, NY. (YO, baby ?) and attended Hampton University receiving a BA in Theatre Arts.

My most public claim to fame has been the Grammy nominated soundtrack, “Waiting To Exhale” with the song “And I Gave My Love To You”. I wrote the lyrics and performed that song with Chante Moore…what a blast, a blessing and a lesson. I performed on a number of projects with numerous producers and artists…Teena Marie, Cody ChesnuTT, Whitney Houston, and the late Oji Pierce who produced Montell Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It”.

My most recent project, Sonja Marie’s Black Album, is sparking some noted interest. The contents of the Black album personify a collection of feelings I almost forgot to tell you, as it opens me up to…create a new! Presently, I’m in the studio with a second installment representing our live experience.

My home is on stage with a CRAZY 7 piece that blows my wig every night we play. We rocked all over Los Angeles; Temple Bar, The Mint, The House of Blues, The Knitting Factory…just to name a few. We turn the party out!

In an attempt to expand as an artist, I’ve incorporated my poetry with dance troops such as The Marshall Dance Company and Winifred R. Harris’ Between Lines. This collaboration is simply magical…dance, music, poetry, theatrics…it makes me bubble over with passion.

I had a supporting role in the powerful docu-drama, “Gang Tapes”. WHAT! You haven’t seen it? The most realistic rendition of gang drama in Los Angeles I’ve seen to date.

I’m currently signed with Arlene Thornton & Associates as a voiceover artist. She has booked me on Comcast (TV) Toyota (radio) and Crazy Taxi (CD Rom).

I cannot forget the literary contributions I’ve made in the following anthologies; “Catch The Fire” edited by D Knowledge, “Supergirls Handbook” edited by Pam Ward and “Voices of Leimert Park: Volume II” edited by V Kali and Michael Datcher. I urge you to find these collections of brilliant poetic works in your nearby book stores. For the WORD continues to save us all.

As God continues to whisper in my ear, what’s to come is so beyond…I swear I have nothing to do with it. I’m just being led and I really hope you can witness the ride.
