Songs For Sixty Five Roses
In June of 2004 North Carolina
producer and musician John Plymale’s 2 1/2 year old daughter Allie was
diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life shortening genetic disease. The facts of the disease are devastating—the median age for survival for a person with CF is only 37 years old. Once Allie’s care and
ongoing therapy began, John felt compelled to do more and wanted to
tap into his relationships producing (Superchunk, Meat Puppets,
Squirrel Nut Zippers) and playing (Pressure Boys, Sex Police) music
over the past twenty years to try to create something positive out of
the situation. A few calls and emails later, the songs came pouring in
from his friends in the regional music community.
The result is Songs For Sixty Five Roses, a benefit CD for Cystic
Fibrosis that features exclusive recordings of NC artists covering
songs by fellow NC artists. The idea was clever and the music is
extraordinary. Two Dollar Pistols honky tonky up Superchunk’s
“Driveway to Driveway”. Eric Bachmann (Archers of Loaf, Crooked
Fingers) deconstructs Let’s Active’s “Every Word Means No”. Tift
Merritt spotlights Stillhouse’s “It’s The Shame”. Portastatic tackles
Ryan Adams’ “Oh My Sweet Carolina”. Jason Ross from Seven Mary Three
reworks Superchunk’s “Mower”. Robert Sledge (Ben Folds Five), Tom
Maxwell (Squirrel Nut Zippers) and Ken Mosher (Squirrel Nut Zippers)
resurrect the local classic “Buddha Buddha”.
Songs For Sixty-Five Roses both unites the regional music scene and
shines a spotlight on some incredible songs and artists, all the while
bringing visibility to and raising money for Cystic Fibrosis. 100% of
the albums proceeds will go to the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
and all artists and project coordinators are donating royalties and
services to this special project.
