There's no doubt that Solar Bear deftly carry the post-hardcore torch for the Mile High City, which in itself has always
fostered a thriving DIY scene that boasts a rich tradition of bands who have stoked the genre's flames. And you can certainly
add the quartet's latest EP, Captains Of Industry, to the list of "music that make Denver punks proud" as these six blistering
tracks of angular, dissonant rock have received plenty of praise from local press.
AV Club Denver wrote, "For all its kicks and screams, Solar Bear is as elegantly complex as it is rowdy. The post-hardcore act
embodies a lot of the genre’s early era luminaries, positioning itself as a smart, noisy rock band not afraid of the occasional
chugging breakdown," while Westword proclaimed, "Time signatures switch suddenly and unexpectedly throughout the six-song
EP, creating oceans of frenzied, finger-stretching chaos before melting into beautiful and sprawling half-tempo breakdowns."
Still, don't underestimate the quartet's ability to pervade hearts and ears beyond The Centennial State. With a jagged, multilayered
sound not unlike These Arms Are Snakes or Colorado brethren Fear Before, Solar Bear is equally as skilled at
harnessing chaos and ferocity as it is at composing songs with deep, groove-laden rhythms and uncommonly catchy melodies.
Marcus Tallitsch's throat-shredding vocals teeter on the edge of an abyss, but the front man is always confident and ready to
match his band mates' proclivity for razor-sharp twists and unpredictable turns.
Perhaps that's where Solar Bear shines the most. Yes, we love the bold, brash, in-your-face nature of songs such as "Endless
Choir" or "Kafka Roaches," but we also appreciate that the band is so much more than a maelstrom of instrumental chaos and
noise. Solar Bear not only write ferocious songs, but intelligent, thoughtful ones as well. There's a sense of knowing when to
allow proceedings to breathe with an atmospheric passage or space-y flourish, and despite the seemingly out-of-control
structures and careening dynamics, transitions - although unexpected - are handled smoothly and without interrupting the flow of
the album.
Chalk another one up for Denver as Captains Of Industry places Solar Bear in the same conversation with the likes of Planes
Mistaken For Stars, Angel Hair, Pinhead Circus, The Blackout Pact, Christie Front Drive, Only Thunder, Love Me Destroyer,
Acrobat Down and Git Some, amongst many others. This is a release that will tear you up and spit you out with nary an
apology, and you'll love every tumultuous second of it. Maybe there really is something in the air one mile above sea level.
Captains Of Industry was recorded by Matt Van Leuven at 8 Houses Down ( Teenage Bottlerocket, Discount, Ninja Gun ) in
Solar Bear's hometown of Denver, CO, and mixed / mastered at the Mixing Station in Seattle, WA. For more information go to www.beartrappr.com/solar-bear.
