In 1996 staat Soetkin Collier (°01/02/1977)
als 19-jarige op het hoofdpodium van het Dranouter Folkfestival als zangeres
van Laïs. Hun optreden wordt dé revelatie van Dranouter
'96 genoemd.
Soetkin combineert haar beginnende zangcarrière met een opleiding Germaanse
Filologie aan de Universiteit van Gent. Gedurende haar hele studieperiode blijft
zij zingen in verschillende groepen. In 1997 richt ze samen met vier andere
muzikanten de folkgroep Ambrozijn op. Daarnaast volgt ze klassieke
zang in de muziekacademie van Gent en privé-zangles bij Hille Bemelmans.
In 1999 trekt Soetkin voor een half jaar naar Zweden om er te studeren aan de
Stockholms Universitet. Ze volgt er eveneens zangles aan de Folkmusikhögskolan
en krijgt ondermeer les van Malin Foxdal en Lena Willemark.
In 2000 voltooit ze haar thesis en studeert ze af met onderscheiding als germaniste.
Als zangeres treedt ze in die periode voornamelijk op in het duo 'Soetkin Collier
en Tom Theuns', met gitarist Tom Theuns. Ze brengen traditionals
en eigen composities in het Nederlands, Frans en het Zweeds. Met dit duo treedt
Soetkin nog steeds op. 2000 is ook het jaar waarin Soetkin mama wordt van haar
eerste dochtertje.
Sinds 2002 is Soetkin de vaste zangeres
van de Belgische groep Urban Trad,
die in 2003 op de 2de plaats eindigt in het Eurovisiesongfestival met het nummer
'Sanomi'.
De groep staat op grote festivals in binnen- en buitenland en geeft drie CD's
uit: One o Four, Kerua en Elem. Momenteel wordt er gewerkt aan een vierde CD
die verwacht wordt in maart 2007.
Soetkin is eveneens zangeres bij Floes,
opgericht rond tekstschrijver en cisterspeler Guido Piccard. Momenteel werkt
de groep aan een project rond de erbarmelijke en Daensiaanse toestanden in het
negentiende-eeuwse en begin twintigste-eeuwse Vlaanderen.
In maart 2006 wordt Soetkins
tweede dochtertje geboren. Tot een paar dagen voor de bevalling staat Soetkin op het
podium en amper drie weken na de geboorte geeft ze opnieuw haar eerste optreden.
In de zomer van 2006 staat ze met de groep Urban Trad op festivals in Frankrijk,
Duitsland en Italië.
Sinds januari 07 is Soetkins eerste soloplaat uit: Nocturne. Hierop brengt ze samen met gitarist Tom Theuns en nyckelharpaspeler Didier François liederen
over liefde, (wan)hoop en vertrouwen in een romantisch-dromerige sfeer. Eigen
composities wisselen af met bewerkingen van traditionals uit Vlaanderen en Zweden. Live worden ze versterkt door contrabassist en basklarinettist Fons Vanhamel.

En 1995 Soetkin Collier fonde le groupe Laïs. Avec ce groupe elle se trouve sur le grand podium du Dranouter Folkfestival en 1996. Ce concert était cité comme la révélation de Dranouter '96.
Soetkin combine ses activités de chant avec une étude de philologie germanique (néerlandais-suédois) à l'université de Gand. Pendant ses études elle n'arrête pas de chanter dans différents groupes.
En 1997 elle fonde avec Tom Theuns, Wim Claeys, Wouter Vandenabeele et Jo Van Bouwel le folkgroup Ambrozijn. Elle suit des cours de chant classique à l'Académie et des cours privés chez Hille Bemelmans.
En 1999 Soetkin va étudier à Stockholm pour six mois. Là-bas elle prend des cours de chant au Folkmusikhögskolan chez Malin Foxdal et Lena Willemark. En 2000 elle finit ses études comme germaniste. Durant cette période elle chante surtout dans le duo 'Soetkin Collier et Tom Theuns' avec le guitariste Tom Theuns. Leur programme est un mélange des chansons traditionnelles et de propres compositions en néerlandais, français et suédois.
Depuis 2002 Soetkin est une des chanteuses fixes du groupe Urban Trad qui termina à la deuxième place au concours Eurosong en 2003 avec la chanson 'Sanomi'. Urban Trad se trouve sur de grands festivals en Belgique et l'étranger. Ils publient trois disques : One o Four, Kerua et Elem. La quatrième disque est prévu pour mars 2007.
Soetkin est aussi chanteuse chez Floes, un nouveau groupe flamand autour de Guido Piccard. Guido s'entoure pour ce projet de musiciens de talent comme Philip Masure, Soetkin Collier, Toon Van Mierlo et Silvie Moors.
En janvier 2007 le disque solo de Soetkin sort. Il s'appelle Nocturne et sur ce disque elle est accompagnée par Tom Theuns à la guitare et Didier François au nyckelharpa. Live ils sont accompagnées par Fons Vanhamel sur contrabass.
Tom Theuns
a étudié le DADGAD-tuning et a voyagé en Inde pour y apprendre le sitar. Il est guitariste-chanteur-compositeur chez Ambrozijn et forme avec Aurélie Dorzee et Stéphan Pougin la groupe Aurelia. Il est aussi guitariste dans différents projets de théâtre. Tom joue également de l'harmonium, du banjo et du piano.
Didier François
a étudié le violon classique à Bruxelles et la composition à Amsterdam. Plus tard il a appris le nyckelharpa ( violon suédois). En 2007 il fait un tournée pour commémorer la mort de Stéphane Grappelli. Il compose aussi la musique pour des films, le théâtre, musicals et ballets.
Fons Vanhamel
est un musicien de coeur. Il joue la contrabass et le bassclarinet. Il a joué avec Derroll Adams, De Stoopkes, From Us To You et il joue aussi avec Dave Munnely, Philip Masure, Helen Flaherty et Aidan Burke. Il a fait des tours avec Chris Joris, Bob Hall, Mick Moloney et Francis Black. Fons est aussi le père de Tim Vanhamel, le chanteur de Millionaire.
Soetkin Collier’s first CD Nocturne is a collection of songs about love, hope, despair and faith. The album’s mood is romantic, dreamy and reflective. She is accompanied by Tom Theuns on guitar and Didier François on nyckelharpa (Swedish violin). Soetkin’s own compositions interweave beautiful arrangements of traditional songs from Flanders and Sweden.
The fascinating harmonies between guitar, vocals and nyckelharpa lead you on a journey northwards, with songs about musicians, night serenades and love stories. On your way back home the ferryman sings about his destination and his love for the water, a mother cradles her child, a woman weeps for the loss of her lover, a snake hypnotises his prey, two men are fighting for the same girl. Everything goes around, without end, and we keep on turning around and around…
Soetkin Collier started as a singer with Laïs and later on with Ambrozijn. In Sweden she followed vocal courses with Lena Willemark and Malin Foxdal, and in Belgium with Yvonne Walter-De Kock, Hille Bemelmans and David Davidse. At the moment she is actively involved in a series of workshops run by Walpurgis, a music theatre in Antwerp. She is well known as a singer in the band Urban Trad.
Guitarist Tom Theuns went to Brittany to learn DADGAD tuning, and to India to learn sitar. He’s the singer-guitarist and composer behind Ambrozijn, and plays alongside Aurelie Dorzee and Stephan Pougin in “Aurelia”. He also plays guitar in several theatre projects.
Didier François studied classical violin in Brussels and composition in Amsterdam and specialised in Swedish nyckelharpa. In 2007 he will be touring with the “Grappelli-tour” to commemorate the death of Stéphane Grappelli. He also composes for film, theatre, musicals and ballet.
Fons Vanhamel plays double bass and bass clarinet. He played with Derrol Adams, de Spelemannen, From Us To You (who were the resident orchestra for Dranouter Folk Festival for a long time); also with de Stoopkes, Absent Friends, Papaver, Dave Munnelly, Helen Flaherty, Philip Masure, Micha Marah and Aidan Burke. He’s also toured with artists like Chris Joris, Bob Hall, Mick Moloney and Francis Black. He is the father of Tim Vanhamel, the singer with Millionaire.
