Small Axe Sound is an international dancehall reggae sound with many bases all over the world.
The Sound was named after a song, done by Bob Marley in 1971. The message is about justice & equality and it reminds people of their ability to take matters into their own hands, if necessary.
The lyrics counteract against opression and call out for self defense and revolution, if human rights are violated.
Small Axe Sound was formed back in the 1980's by Zimbabwe's legendary dancehall selector Farai Shambare. It started off humbly playing reggae in the ghettos of Zimbabwe.
It was during this time that Small Axe Sound proved their talent and grew to be one of the best sound systems in the country. Over the years, Small Axe Sound produced some of the country's wickedest dancehall talent. Big respects reaching out to some of the early selectors- Selecta Caesar, Kuda Culture, Gidza Banton and Shelaz.
Small Axe Sound spread its wings to the U.K in the early 90s with Farai Shambare as the sole ambassador for the sound. He made Small Axe a popular sound system during his regular gigs at the Rastafarian H.Q in Kennington, South East London. Small Axe also proved ready to cut down any big tree with a clash against Jamaica's legendary clash selector Ricky Trooper (playing for Jaro) back in 1997.
Maybe because no internet communication tools were available yet in these times, a new generation started carrying this great name and work in the 90's - without knowing about the other crews existence.
Sensi Ryder & the crew from Aken built one of the earliest 'real soundsystems' (equipped with dubplates, heavy speaker sets & stuff) in Europe ('98/'99). In the US it was YT & his crew from Cincinnati & Portland, Father Jakes & Dj Collin from Bridgeport and last but not least DJ Fabulous from New York who accompanied the sound into the new millennium.
In 2009 all the Small Axe sound crews began connecting each other and they renamed to 'Small Axe Intl Movement'.
Tha Plan is unity & more strenght, and it shows how many small pieces make a big one.
All out of many - one axe; ready to fall big tree!
The Sound is playing every weekend, all kind of events, all type of styles. The teams are well experienced and have played many countries and the biggest festivals on the global scene. In 2009 YT & his crew took the title at the annual US Northwest Cup Clash. In 2010 the UK Crew with Likkle T & Cyanide took the title at 'Fire in the City' soundclash in London.
Small Axe comes with a heavy and unique dubplate selection, which guarantees explosive performances in every situation. Music policy is jamaican 70's, 80's, 90's up to the latest Dancehall, Soca, Hip Hop & other Clubstyles - depending on the event style.
