Mr Dark - presents skeptic and jid sames e.p. 4/5

--

This seven-track ep from the wandsworth trio of Skeptic, Jid Sames and Mr Dark is a fine UK release, ill have you know. Mr Dark handles the production while Skeptic and Sames divvies up the tracks equally. 40 Bricks is ex-death metal vocalist Jid Sames' effort, plodding along wonderfully with a cheeky piano and flute sample, while the lads' locale of wandsworth is described as the place where the "drug-crazed foes exchange blows and bloody noses after the pub closes". Sounds great to me. Dust Angels, meanwhile, is an ode to the dirt and grime of the Big Smoke, with Skeptic - the yin to Sames' yang - blessing the mic device with considerable finesse. A quirky, off-kilter release, definitely one for the shopping list.

Hailing from Wandsworth, this threesome look to lock things down with an effective four-track EP, Mr Dark unveils a nice line in prodcution, while the two emcees impress with witty banter. So fresh, so clean!

Mr Dark's obviously been busy sifting charity shop gold - 'Persuasive Percussion'? - from the mountains of Mrs Mills LPs. The result is a four song EP whose sounds - tip-toeing pianos, clonking cowbells, chinking guitars - conjure up the same kind of eccentric Englishness as Hammer Horrors, Ealing Comedies, and Steptoe & Son. Meanwhile, Skeptic and Jid Sames "flip game like spatchleors". Simile-fond rappers, no doubt. But fine ones, certainly.

Mr Dark? who be he? Why does his name seem familiar yet spooky to me? why has he lashed 40 Bricks with such brilliantly minimal piano, flute and lounge blues vocals when he knows im a sucker for all 3? Skeptic and Jid Sames are content to stalk the spaces, spitting choice lines where they can. Sentence Boxing keeps up the spectral vibe with a terrifying tiptoe around Darks imagination. Dust Angels has a warped weft of ectoplasmic vocal that damn near causes coronaries. And the stunning Siren waves you off down that dark country lane with satanic strings and a fucking strange atonal vocal and blues harp thats way more out there than anything anticon or def jux have given us in a while. Great, gruesome stuff. Go get.

Main Rock is on fire with this one

if you haven't heard this 12, then you must. Just as UK hip hop sometimes appears as bit "it all sounds the same" Skep and Jid destroy it. but before i get into them pair, its all about Mr. Dark This man has some ridiculous melodies in here, 40 bricks will have you hummin for days as where Sirens will leave you haunted. Darks production skills are up there with the best, all the vocals sound really crisp and the dynamics and overall sound of all these tracks is top notch. As for Sentence Boxin, Dark what have you done to us with this one we're all wandering about singing the melody! we can't get it out of our heads man!

Now aside from Dark's awesome production this 12's amazing lyrically. Skep comes with a mean flow and lines that leave you flabbergasted like "watch how skep wrecks crowd control, when i say ho you can buy me alc-o-hol" / "we roll crooked like a roach offa train ticket" / "i seen mc's in there mocchino (is that how you spell that?? - ED) trousers who probably think das efx is a washing powder" and the like he's also got a killer voice and the man is tech whilst making it all sound so easy

Jid Sames (ex thrash rock band front man and all round madhead) is also bloody ridiculous with ryhmes galore. A raspy ass flow and killer style (not forgetting a stupidly dope name!) Jid sounds like he's ready to test any emcee, anywhere More sick lyrics from this man all over the place - "so i ghost write for dead children who chimney swept the red brick buildings till it killed them" the mans got bare skills. And whats extra dope about these 2 on a track is they fit together so well, both complimeting each others style perfectly. It would be very interesting to see them wreck a stage which i believe they are doing here and there so keep em peeled.

do not sleep on this, Main Rock is officially in the building.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
