Greetings family!!! Because you are so special to me, I decided to write my own bio without the critique of a professional hand so that you can truly appreciate why I do music. You see, music has been my church, my mosque, my synagogue; basically my therapist. We all know that music has the power to help us walk our way right out of misery and into a better place or our ancestors would not have needed to create the Spirituals, Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Rock & Roll, Hip Hop and Neo Soul.
My humble desire is to take you on a journey with words and melodies that will uplift you when you need lifting, help you cuddle when you need cuddling and help your feet move when you need to dance. My sound is a feel good sound that I call Soul Rock. As you listen to my voice, I pray that it touches the core of you- resonating with the positive energy that is a part of the transformation or the affirmations in your life. My mother gave me Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, and Earth, Wind, and Fire. I would like to give you Ozara Ode’.
Now a little bit about me. I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where I spent most of my life but was blessed to spend some of my childhood in New York and Florida because my family was in the Coast Guard. Usually, the first question I am asked after someone sees me perform is, “who were your influences” and I have to say my family. I come from a musical family; and growing up there was three things I could count on; good food, rich-soulful music and lots of laughter in our large family. Be it Sunday morning before church or during a family gathering, my aunts and uncles harmonies filled the air in the home of Granny Mattie’s –my father’s mother, no matter the weather. On my mom's side, Granny Flossie could be heard humming to lift her spirits when the pantry became low and it seemed the pots would be empty. My father (Eddie Joe Brooks) was a crooner, and my mother (Tina Mason) even sang lead in my stepfather’s band.
In March of 2007, I finished my first album, “I Dream.” This album is very important to me because after working hard to get signed; I decided to take my music into my own hands. It was not that there were no opportunities for me at the Majors, but no one knew what category of music I should fit in and all their ideas were no where close to the music I was hearing in my head. So with all the money I had saved up and with the help from my mother and grandmother, I executively produced “I Dream”, sold my furniture and packed up all that my car could hold and moved to Atlanta.
I was blessed to perform on all her top stages; from Center Stage to 14th Street Playhouse. From appearing on the major Atlanta radio station, V103’s Passion & Poetry with Joyce Little, to being on Peachtree TV’s JJ on Atlanta. In 2010 I went on a 3 week promo tour in the UK where I blessed the stage at the world famous Jazz Kafe in London. I also performed at the Bizz'Art in Paris where I came in first place 2 times in a row for the Sankofa Soul Contest. My journey has been a testament to why I believe in dreams.
