There have been few MC's with the skills to walk between both worlds, attaining success while simultaneously commanding the respect of the indie music aficionados. SmCity's mission is to market the message, package the struggle, and brand the revolution. The music mirrors his hometown of Washington DC, bringing the ghetto and politics face to face in a musical staring match for the ages. At age 24, Simeon "SmCity" Booker has lived an excitingly diverse life, from resisting the social forces heating up the concrete benches of his neighborhood to sharing the stage with the legendary Last Poets and sitting on panels with Dr. Benjamin Chavis.
The Indie Life LP marks SmCity's debut release and will be accompanied by a long form music video, The Indie Life: A Motion Picture Album which premiered on Okayplayer in April. The short film is essentially the worlds 1st video mixtape. The 13 track LP is an expose' into the personal lives of those chasing their dreams against all odds, and the conflicts that arise along the way. "The story of coming up is nothing new in hip hop. but the story of how the come up changes you. thats something different." says SmCity. There is an epic feel to the music provided by some of the best Hip Hop producers the DMV has to offer. From the statement making, "Watch Me" feat Trey Dupree produced by The Best Kept Secret (wale, rhymefest, young chris) to the cinematic "Thin Air" produced by Judah (Pastor Troy, Wale, Stat Quo), its apparent this is no typical collection of music. Features from the project have appeared all over the web from Allhiphop.com to HipHopDx.com.
From head engineer in a recording studio to hosting/producing the #1 rated hip hop show on college radio in the DC/MD/VA area, Funkadelic Freestyles, SmCity has continually developed as an artist and visionary in his field. Recording, Mixing and Mastering at the age of 19 was only the beginning as he found himself the front man of a budding hip hop/alternative band, DCUnplugged-- playing gigs across the city. His solo career since then has taken him to college audiences up and down the east coast from Syracuse to Howard, to the University of Delaware opening for major artists including Drake and Young Jeezy. In his hometown DC, he gave a special guest performance for a sold out audience at URB magazine's Inaugural Gala for President Obama feat Charles Hamilton and Pharoahe Monch in 2009. He was subsequently featured in the magazine's "Next 100" to blow issue that same year.
If where SmCity has been is any sign of what's in store for the MC, we can all expect explosive results from his cocktail of sex appeal and social awareness. Bringing innovative lyricism and content with depth to the mainstream is no easy task, but aiming high and breaking barriers down is his mission. In his own words: "Commanded the Invasion, The Jets Have Landed, Respect Demanded!"
