Rap History:
Pain truly does make for great music. This is a fact that seldom seems to escape Sicarii as an artist and individual. Born and raised in Springfield, MA and surrounding areas to German and Irish parents, Sicarii was always ahead of the curve, excelling in sports and academics from a young age. Most of his early life was standard, but things were bubbling under the surface. "From as early as I could remember I always felt different. I knew I wasn't but I just wanted to be normal." While going through the difficult transition into adolescence, Sicarii fell in love. With hip-hop. Immediately infatuated with the rebellious, aggressive, represent where your from asthetic of early 90's Rap like Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang, and 2Pac, Sicarii instantly became a fan and more. "Right from the beginning, if I remember correctly, I was always a fan and an artist. I just loved and related to everything about the movement, the culture. And I was always good with vocab, so I started making my own rhymes." Sic spent the duration of his high-school days, recording original songs in garages, linking up with like-minded music heads, and making early performances at hole in the wall venues in the area.
Then, Sicarii fell in love again. This time with drugs and alcohol forging a life-long bond that would take him to places "no person should go". "At first, it was just drinking 40's, smoking weed, you know just to get that creative spark. My father was an alcoholic so I knew where it led, but I was young. I didn't care." In 2001, after independently releasing "Of Epic Proportion" (a solo album comprised of very early recordings) Sicarii met Frank White (then Fallen Virtues) and along with Golden Boy started the group, Kin Dread, each being the elite spitter from their respective crews. The group recorded several album's worth of songs and began doing shows at clubs and bars in Western Mass. "During that time, I still had some semblence of control. My addiction was progressing, but I could still put on that front like it was okay. Like it was just part of the process." As 2002 came, Golden Boy was incarcerated for 15 months, leaving Kin Dread to carry on as a duo, yet forging a parternship still strong to this day. The next several years began a viscious cycle for Kin Dread and it's followers, as they recorded and released two official mixtapes ("Pandora's Box" in 2005 and "Appetizer 4 Destruction" in 2007), shared mics and stages with many of the underground's elite (7l & Esoteric, Jus Allah, Slaine, Mass Pyke, The Camp, Virtuoso, Mic Stylz, Barak Yalad, etc.) and amassed a nice DIY buzz in the Massachusetts Hip-Hop scene (Won 2004 Valley Advocate Best Rap Group). However, as Kin Dread's status was raised musically, personal problems and life's tribulations continued to plague the group's momentum. "It's like we took 5 steps forward, and then I took 3 steps back. As my disease got worse and the drugs got harder, I became a liability to the group. I was f---ing up." A wirlwind of detoxes, treatment centers, and halfway houses sooned followed, with Frank White being forced to strike out on his own.
In July of 2008 everything ended. "I died. I had just gotten out of Ludlow (Correctional Center) and I was doing dope and I overdosed. My girl is slapping me and pouring soda on my head. That was the start of the end of that life and the beginning of a new one." Long time friend Golden Boy approached Sicarii about investing in his "Before I Sleep" project with his new company Black Book Inc. (co-founded by Era, Genesis, and Frank White) "When I woke up, I had to release this music. It was too good, too powerful to just sit on some computer and rot. Plus, when I got clean I started making the best music of my life. So I HAD to put this out to show everything". 'Before I Sleep'(9/8/09 BBI002 and 12/24/2009 DCP001) marks the first release and dawn of a new day for Sicarii and Black Book Inc. "You know, I've been through everything, seen, felt and been through things that no human should have to. But, I came through it all and I did it colorfully, and I continue to do it with people that I love and believed in me when I couldn't believe in myself. But for the grace of Allah, we here now that's all that matters. 'Before I Sleep' then 'The Awakening'. I'm taking yall on a journey with me."
