Introduction: The one and only Shirin takes acoustic folk rock back to its roots with a twist of fantasy, like Tyrannosaurus Rex or The Pink Fairies did in the 60’s hippy era. And related artists? Well Joni Mitchell and Alanis Morisette are also strong-minded female acoustic guitarists with well-crafted melodic folk/rock songs. Being a Libra, Shirin is creative and artistic, and loves the fun side of life. Even as a child, she had a vivid imagination when it came to writing stories, which is evident in her songs today.

Biography: Shirin graduated with an MSc in Human Molecular Genetics in 1998. Later she left science to become a musician, and joined the British Academy of New Music, where she did a course in Contemporary Popular Music for 3 years. She performed gigs internally at college and at other venues such as the Rhythm Factory; the Carling Academy; the New Empire Theatre, Southend; De Monfort Hall, Leicester; and The Mama Pearls, Southend. Her set always gets the crowd clapping along. She did 2 singing classes at the City Lit - Rock Pop and Soul Singing, and Jazz Singing. Shirin started working with a versatile percussionist/drummer Nadir Sidali (www.nadirsidali.com) and they were recording a new EP with the multi-talented producer Jay Purcell for an independent label (www. jaypurcell.net) but Jay left for America so she will continue her recordings with another producer.

Who I'd like to meet:

Other musicians, and just other like-minded fun loving people!

Interests:

Going to gigs, eating out, cafes, and just exploring new parts of London all the time! There's nothing like a quiet walk around Hampstead Heath which can clear the mind! There's this really cool cafe where I live, I go there and hang out with friends, or on my own when I want to write songs. You see, they play great music in there - their playlist has all the latest Indie songs and cool obscure bands I can learn about - you should check out "The Concretes" which they played in there once, I bought their album. The music in the cafe is loud enough to give a bohemian atmosphere but quiet enough to just feel a groove to put me in the mood to write songs. I also love cooking, I always try out new things. I made some lovely chocolate mouse laced with the cherry liquer I brought back from Portugal. Any PMT can be cured with this!

What I like:

Music, music and more music! Resurrection Records is my favourite record shop in the whole wide world it has all the Goth vinyls and CDs I dream of.

The first record I ever bought - Non-stop Erotic Cabaret - by Soft Cell

I like world cinema, ghost and Vampire films like the old Hammer Horror Classics as well. No wonder I love Bela Lagousi by Bauhaus! I grew up in the New Romantic and goth scenes of the early 80s. Nothing can beat Adam Ant, that is truly my era!

Aesthetically I like Celtic art, eastern wall-hangings, fairies, gargoyles, castles, pictures of bands I like, candles, sheer lanterns, butterflies, silver jewellery, clothes which I can never have enough of
