Born in the end of september 2004, Shaolin is a six-piece metal outfit from Montreal. Composed of ex-members of Days of Redemption, Camilla Rhodes, On the Edge of Tears and Collapse of the Sky, Shaolin employ elements of grindcore, jazz, metal and hardcore to shatter established conceptions of melody and dissonance. The result is a dizzying construct of extreme heaviness and heart-wrenching harmonic beauty.

Montreal is a rising cradle of novel heavy music, spawning acts such as Ion Dissonance, Despised Icon, Tears from the Sky, Beneath the Massacre, Cryptopsy and Neuraxis, to name but a few. Shaolin is no exception. The bands fearsome double-pronged vocal assault has quickly earned their peers stamp of approval after many intense local shows all across the Province sharing the stage with many of the aforementioned bands.

Shaolin's debut EP Gaining Freedom at the Expense of Virtue hit shelves on May 2nd, 2006. The album was recorded by Yanic Desgroseillers and Guillaume Carle-Falstrault (Tears from the Sky, Stand As One, Arrogance) and was released on up-and-coming Montreal label Galy Records.

''Covering the kind of challenging territory traveled by very few, Canada's Shaolin perform an uncompromising brand of modern hardcore that mixes with grindcore, jazz and metal. Earth-shatteringly heavy and wickedly beautiful.''

''Metalcore dischordancy, metallic extremity and death tinges do a morbid dance of destruction across your field of hearing when Shaolin cranks up. The band is able to punish with mosh grooves or assault with seemingly arhythmic crushingness. Oddly, as extreme as this metalcore act is, you can hear vestiges of classic hardcore roots here and there, adding an extra dimension to the songwriting. A little personality brought to the table is always a good thing and Shaolin does that for sure.''

''Well-played, thunderous deathcore featuring an abundance of odd time changes, stammering breakdowns, adventurous fretboard wizardry, and at least five different types of varying harsh or forceful vocals (.)''
