In 2006, a standstill equals the end.
Secret Discovery, that dark rock act from the heart of Germanys Ruhr area, chose that end for themselves towards the close of the last millennium. And parted as friends, as the saying goes.
Roughly half a decade later, in 2004, that end turned out not to be a permanent one. Secret Discovery were back, with a new prayer up their sleeves. Pray was the title of their lets call it comeback album, which went down extremely well with the public. The band presented themselves more mature in terms of their songwriting, as well as their stylistic elements, mixed by the quintet to develop their very own Secret Discovery sound.
Little wonder, you might be tempted to think, after all Secret Discovery, alongside acts such as Project Pitchfork, Deine Lakaien, Das Ich, Lacrimosa and Goethes Erben, were not only a strong motor for the renaissance of the German gothic scene in the early Nineties, but also forerunners of gothic metal made in Germany, and their 1993 offering, Into The Void is still considered a genre classic. The more years that passed, the more the band opened themselves to new ideas and different styles. Question Of Time manifested their status on the Mount Olympus of rock, metal and crossover, Slave being the final and definitely worthy swansong of this unique act.
But why waste time on all this background information?
Secret Discovery have tasted blood again. The success of Pray and the thoroughly enthusiastic reactions to their hand-picked gigs motivated the band further, inspiring them to work on their latest release, Alternate.
Alternate is aptly entitled, because Secret Discoverys sonic update alternates, too. Their guitars rock heavily, the keyboards caress Kai Hoffmanns constantly progressing vocals, and then there are those hook lines! Secret Discovery have come up with their very own version of contemporary pop music, and thats a real compliment.
Were used to falling between the stools, and we dont want to be categorized in a single pigeonhole, frontman Kai Hoffmann explains, adding with a smug undertone: Weve always enjoyed helping ourselves to various genres, to be honest. Were open to different musical directions, and looking at it in a positive way, we may end up creating a new pigeonhole, just for ourselves.
Right he is. In terms of their lyrics and their music, Alternate is Secret Discoverys coming of age. And what a coming of age!
Our lyrics are always marked by our own personal experiences, the highs and lows in our lives. Dreams and fears, love or hate can be found in the themes of our lyrics, Kai adds, and we always strive for a lyrical style thats not overly clear, but subtle instead. There should always be enough room for personal interpretation. Our musical influences still stem from the Eighties, the early days of new wave and gothic, particularly when it comes to our songwriting, but pop acts such as Coldplay, R.E.M. or Placebo have also left their traces.
And its still good to be back, isnt it?
Oh yes, Kai replies, Pray was important in that it helped us collect our thoughts, musically. In terms of sound, its a fairly typical Secret Discovery recording, sounding a little like a journey in time through the tracks on our first albums, only in a modern outfit. Looking at it this way, Pray was a statement first and foremost: Were back, we still sound like Secret Discovery we are Secret Discovery!
Alternate was different. This time around, it was our aim to develop the overall sound, we wanted to do something that still sounds like Secret Discovery, but is different at the same time; contemporary in true SD style on the one hand, and at the same time different enough to make it impossible to compare to its predecessors. When it came to the songwriting, we freed ourselves of all parameters, it materialized in the process which direction we were going to take. We definitely didnt want any templates to restrict our creativity in any way.
Mission accomplished.
Alternate is Secret Discovery Mark 2006.
Without limits, without pigeonholes, without parameters, more from the gut, with more authenticity and even more amazing hooklines.

Im Jahr 2006 bedeutet Stillstand das Ende.
Dieses Ende haben sich Secret Discovery, eben jene Dark Rock-Formation aus dem Herzen des Ruhrpotts, zum Ende des letzten Milleniums selber ausgesucht. In aller Freundschaft, wie es so schn heit.
Dass besagtes Ende glcklicherweise kein fortwhrendes war, zeigte sich eine halbe Dekade spter, im Jahr 2004. Die Secrets waren zurck, mit einem Gebet im Gepck. Pray, so der Titel des, ja, nennen wir es ruhig Comeback-Albums, schlug ein wie die sprichwrtliche Bombe. Die Band prsentierte sich gereift, sowohl was das Songwriting anging, aber auch was die Stilelemente anbelangte, die das Quintett zum ureigenen Secret-Sound vermengte.
Kein Wunder, knnte man sich denken, schlielich waren Secret Discovery neben Bands wie Project Pitchfork, Deine Lakaien, Das Ich, Lacrimosa und Goethes Erben, nicht nur ein starker Antriebsmotor fr die Renaissance der deutschen Gothic-Szene zu Beginn der Neunziger Jahre, sondern auch Wegbereiter fr Gothic Metal aus hiesigen Gefilden, kann man doch das 93iger Machwerk Into The Void, ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken, als Klassiker des Genres bezeichnen. Je mehr Jahre ins Land zogen, desto mehr ffneten sich die Secrets neuen Ideen und anderen Stilen. Question Of Time manifestierte den Status der Bochumer Herren im Rock-/Metal-/Crossover-Olymp, und Slave war dann schlielich der finale, und beraus gebhrende, Abgesang auf eine grandiose Formation.
Wieso das ganze Hintergrundgeplnkel?
Secret Discovery haben wieder Blut geleckt. Der Erfolg von Pray und die beraus enthusiastischen Reaktionen auf die handverlesenen Gigs, haben die Jungs zustzlich motiviert und bei ihrer Arbeit zum neuen Silberling Alternate beflgelt.
Alternate, wie passend, denn abwechselnd ist auch das 2006er Sound-Update der Secrets. Die Gitarren rocken derbe, die Keyboards umschmeicheln den immer besser werdenden Gesang Kai Hoffmanns, und dann diese Hooklines. Secret Discovery haben ihre ganz eigene Version von kontemporrer Popmusik fertig gestellt, und das ist in ein waschechtes Kompliment.
Wir haben uns inzwischen daran gewhnt, zwischen den Sthlen zu sitzen, dass wir uns auch nicht einfach so in eine einzige Schublade stecken lassen wollen, erklrt Frontmann Kai Hoffmann, mit einem sffisanten Unterton fgt er an: Im Ernst, wir haben uns eigentlich schon immer ganz gerne bei den unterschiedlichsten Genres bedient. Wir sind musikalisch offen, und wenn man es mal positiv betrachtet, schaffen wir vielleicht gerade dadurch eine neue, unsere eigene, Schublade.
Wo er Recht hat. Textlich und musikalisch liefern Secret Discovery mit Alternate ihr Reifezeugnis ab. Mit Auszeichnung.
Wir werden textlich eigentlich immer durch persnliche Erlebnisse, durch Hhen und Tiefen unserer Leben beeinflusst. Auch Trume oder ngste, oder auch gerne mal Liebe oder Hass, finden sich als Thematik in unseren Lyrics wieder, erklrt Kai, wobei wir uns immer um eine nicht allzu deutliche, teilweise eher subtile Art zu texten bemhen. Es soll immer noch Raum fr persnliche Interpretation bleiben. Musikalische Einflsse kommen nach wie vor natrlich aus den Achtziger Jahren, der Geburtszeit des New Wave und Gothic, vor allem was das Songwriting angeht, aber auch Popbands wie Coldplay, R.E.M. oder Placebo haben ihre Spuren hinterlassen.
And it is still good to be back, isnt it?
Oh ja, erwidert Kai, Pray war wichtig fr uns, um uns musikalisch wieder zu sammeln. Es ist ein fr Secret Discovery soundmig recht typisches Album, das irgendwie so ein bisschen wie eine Zeitreise durch die Stcke der ersten Alben in modernerem Gewand klingt. So gesehen war Pray eigentlich erstmal ein Statement: "Wir sind wieder da, wir klingen noch wie Secret Discovery wir sind Secret Discovery!"
Bei Alternate war es anders. Dieses mal berwog der Wunsch den Gesamtsound weiter zu entwickeln, wir wollten etwas machen, dass zwar weiterhin wie Secret klingt, aber irgendwie auch anders ist; einerseits zeitgem SD-typisch, andererseits unterschiedlich genug, als dass man es mit den Vorgngern direkt vergleichen knnte. Allerdings waren wir beim Songwriting total frei von Vorgaben und es kristallisierte sich erst nach und nach heraus, in welche Richtung wir uns bewegten. Wir wollten auf jeden Fall keine Schablone, die uns in irgendeiner weise in unserer Kreativitt einschrnkt.
Mission accomplished.
Alternate ist Secret Discovery anno 2006.
Ohne Grenzen, ohne Schubladen, ohne Vorgaben. Dafr mit mehr Bauch, mehr Authenzitt und noch mehr unglaublichen Hooklines.
