SECOND COMBAT / MOTIVATION - split CD
The art for this CD features a monkey , a rhino , a rabbit , a bird , a lion , a deer and an ox X'ed up, dressed in youth crew gear ( shorts , hoodies with Xs on them , varsity jackets ) and playing hardcore.Awesome.That,along with the message on the back of the CD stating that it is "dedicated to the straight edge and vegetarian lifestyle", really sets the stage for the music. SECOND COMBAT has been around for years now, and they have definitely perfected their energetic,circle-pitting,sing-along-friendly sXe hardcore. And check out some of the lyrics: " I was sitting on the bench when the officer comes / To arrest me and my friends because of having a good time / We're come for the music and give it a chance / Not waiting for the businessmen to tear us apart / Assuming we're metal and were drink a goat blood / The kids were clean with no drug and drinking at all." Fucking A-plus.MOTIVATION was unfamiliar to me before this, but I'll definitely keep an eye on them from now on.They also play sXe hardcore in the youth crew vein, but faster and less melodic than SECOND COMBAT, just in-your-face hardcore energy. I highly recommend checking out both bands on this rad split. (VX) XYosefX -

SECOND COMBAT - What Has Inspired Us? 7''EP
This is the debut 7'' by this Malaysian Straightedge band, after holding it down for the past ten years. This one's got it all: blast beats , a bunch of DAG NASTY or laterTURNING POINT style guitar leads (actually most of the guitar part of this platter are oozing with some part of melody), some out-of-nowhere screeching back-up vocals, gang choruses, and i swear the intro to ''worth life to redeem'' is a STRAY CATS riff! The B-side of this record is definitely more straight-foward and less all over the map than the flip.I can't say im into this but their hearts are absolutely in the right place!

Second Combat 'what has inspired us?' 7" / CD

Well well well. This is a killer Cd, no less. First i was a bit sceptic as i'm not really into youthcrew oldschool stuff, and the soldier of hardcore imagery on the cover hasn't lead me into a good approach of "What As Inspired Us ?" released on both Commitment Records and United Front Records. But, and hell yeah, i've listened to this firing, true, political, emotionnal and damn great album again and again, and i can say it's the best work of Second Combat known ever and one of the best record i've heard this year. Hardcore used to be 1/3 music 2/3 lyrics, and it's a pleasure to see the band really engaged on politics and social issues, painting a deep point of view of youth lives in Malaysia. If you're looking for a dense straight edge old school band with passionate lyrics : Run fast and get this one before the predictable sold out.

Commitment Records have been releasing the finest
Straight Edge hardcore 7" vinyls since 1996. Robert
put up records for some of the best SxE bands like
Youth of Today, Reaching Forward, Vitamin X, and
Pointing Finger.
Now, if you're curious about the South East Asia
Straight Edge hardcore scene. Then you better check
out this 7" EP. Klang Valley Straight Edge band Second
Combat kicks in 6 tracks of relentless youthcrew
hardcore delivered with passion and sincerity. They've
been around for more than 10 years now, and yet they
never failed to stay true to their words. First song,
"Striving to Deny You" is about being poison free and
resisting the traditional lifestyle. This song has a
lot of melodic riffs. Second song, "Infidelity"
addresses racism and sexism. It's then followed by a
song that tackles mass slavery and sweatshops.
4th song, "Second Combat", celebrates the importance
unity and equality. "You Won't Listen", is a song
concerning the horrors of addiction. Final track,
"What has inspired Us", is a catchy song about
inspiration.
How each and every one of us can help one another, and
together make a difference. Another solid release from
Commitment Records.

Hey, we have hot stuff here! This will bring wide
smiles to all the posi-core fans.
'WHAT HAS INSPIRED US' is the debut 7" on xCommitmentx
records for these sXe veterans. SECOND COMBAT have
been around for over 10 years and now deliver 6 brand
new songs of the best positive HC around.
The five-some constructs a sound, founded on solid old
school roots, that's really fresh and personal and
packs together a good deal of different ideas. What's
caught my attention here are the vocals that vary, in
a cool way, from high pitching to classic melodic
youth crew sing-a-longs to angry screams and a really
brilliant songwriting.
The album opens up with 'Striving to deny you' that's
a classic youth crew track ( in my opinion a good
track but it's the least solid of the whole lot ) to
completely switch the binary and move to the next 5
tracks where different elements ( fast parts
alternated to breakdowns, catchy sing-a-longs, good
riffs with a metallic like edge and melodic solos )
are blend together to get very interesting tunes.
The guys sing about their view of what HC is all about
and deal with some vital issues like racism, sexism
and wage slavery.
The sound recording is quite good yet it's a bit
low-profile comparing it to other big budges releases
coming out these days, but…who cares when songs are
this good.
The 7'' comes in a black vinyl edition with a cool sxe
artwork.
That's this album right here and you'd be a fool to
ignore it. Support SECOND COMBAT. Support Malaysian
HC.
