Heres a little something for ya.
Screwtop Detonators were born in the humble Hills of Perth, Western Australia, Kalamunda to be exact (that’s right, the place with the good pub). Kalamunda highschool was where we met; bonding over underage drinking sessions, can bongs, a genuine love of punk and all things rock and roll. It wasn’t until we graduated with A+ grades, good looks and sharp whits that we thought of the idea. “A Rock’n’Roll band! No a punk rock band!” whatever you want to call it (proll-core for all we care)
A late night VB meeting at Leroy’s house spawned the name. “Yeah we want it be to like Rocket from The Crypt and the Clash, but its gotta be about beer and explosions.” Screwtop Detonators were born.
After penning some songs and hitting the pub curcuit, it was time to lay em down. Our first self titled E.P was released in 2005 through Perth based label Rabbit Records. “Let You Go” ended up on an American compilation (Drink, Fight, Fuck) with the Dwarves and some other great bands. It’s floatin around, we suggest you get your hands on it because it good!
The release helped things along and saw us sharing stages with some of our favourite bands, and meeting a few of the musicians who were the reason we started the band - The Hellacopters, Radio Birdman and most Rock‘n’Roll acts nice enough to tour Perth. This would eventually (two years down the track) lead to being Deniz Tek’s “new favourite young Australian band” or so we heard he said on the radio. Tommy Ramone was front and center at the Hyde Park Hotel, and we were makin our own history. These were the days!
We snagged a spot at Perth’s Big Day Out along with some other good stuff. Some people liked us, some didn’t – those people that don’t dig us are, more often than not, into pony rides, watching their language and stamp collecting. So we feel sorry for them.
Word spreads quickly you know… before we knew it there were people at our gigs and some radio people started spinning our disc.
So whadeeya do after that….? Yep you guessed it, Hit the government up for some coin and head to The U.S! This was a sh*t load of fun. We met a lot of good people/bands and played at the Bamboozle Festival. New York was too much fun; we got a little chubby and ran outta money. So we headed home.
After something like that, we couldn’t go on with our day jobs and live at our mum’s houses anymore. 2007 saw a major detour in our journey. Melbourn town here we come! Jeez it was tough… there was a joint right around the corner from where we first lived that sold $1 pots. Monday nights saw us with a belly full of grogg and a deflated hope of getting a job the next day.
Again… same story, by 2008 crowds built and peopled started talking. We had really settled in Melbourne and loved every minute of it. We stole more bands riders; Teen-Generate, Baby Animals, The New Christs, and The Wildhearts. We thought we’d better get a record together.
“3, 2, 1 I’M DONE…” is our first full length record. It is the result of three recording session’s accross two states, five years of live shows and calling on favours from anyone kind enough to offer. We worked with Charles Fisher (Hoodoo Gurus, Radio Birdman) on a few tracks which was a great experience, the rest was finished with (man of few words) Chris Dickie (The Pogues, Depeche Mode) Its seen great reviews and generouse airplay. You should buy a copy. It’s really good, trust us. The good Folk at Off the Hip records put it out for us - they love it, and they know their sh*t.
With the departure of Lord Charles on drums – we recruited Dan Morrison (Area-7); he’s now driving the engine room. He can pound the drums and the beers.
This pretty much brings us to 2009 we think?
See you at a show, Buy a record, stay intouch!
