SCHVENDES premiere "LAY THE NOOSE" Film Clip
Come and celebrate with Schvendes as they present to you their clip "Lay The Noose", deftly directed by the masterly Richard Berney (Sugar Army's 'Acute').
Joining the party will be live sets from The Wednesday Society and DJ Gemma Pike (and Schvendes of course!)
In May this year the band, Richard and an impeccable cast and crew ventured into The Buffalo Club in Fremantle. A secretive lodge of sorts for discussion and drinking, its the first time we've had a look at the inner workings of a hallowed ground. A privilege and a pleasure - it was a day of drinking, dancing and of tall tales and true.

SCHVENDES FEATURED ON TRIPLE J!
from Steph Hughes Home and Hosed blog -
Here in H&H HQ (my filthy desk full of broken CD cases I've accidentally rolled over because I can't control my wheely desk chair) I've just been delivered the latest bunch of tracks from a band I hugely respect - Perth's own Schvendes.
To put it simply, Schvendes are a bunch of ghostly murder balladeers, who mine the darker depths of themselves to make their music. Think a sparse kind of Bad Seeds draped in gorgeous string arrangements. The bittersweet tones that vocalist Rachael Dease taps into are a huge part of what sets their mood, and never have they sounded eerier than in their new, higher-fidelity recordings (As heard in Lay the Noose, as stream-able above). Schvendes found a complimentary producer in the shape of Dave Parkin (who is known for his intriguing production work on recordings by Snowman and Sugar Army). His widescreen approach suits Schvendes's song writing pretty damn well. Hopefully (and allegedly) more fruits of these Parkin sessions will be heard on an album due out soon.
SCHVENDES RELEASE DOUBLE A SIDE SINGLE
While most of us spent the festive season concerning ourselves with culinary bliss and exchanges of gifts and pleasantries, Schvendes were far more interested in the further exploration of their delicate sound. Past recordings have been firm about their lo-fi leanings, from the gloomy live record ‘The Scoundrel Was Made An Outcast’ (2003), to the multiple WAMi nominated ‘Turn Out Your Lights’ EP (2006), to the dynamic and brooding debut album ‘Sweet Talk Your Enemies’ (2008) – but never one to rest on their laurels, the band were on the pursuit of engaging their works in a more high-end recorded environment.
Such a collision of light, shade, subtle complexity and increased audio quality control needed to be handled delicately, with the band choosing wisely in producer Dave Parkin (Sugar Army, Snowman) to take the reins on their latest recorded endeavour. The result being two new songs equal in strength but contrasting in execution and meaning – one focused on groove, the other on space and atmosphere. While they may tell two different tales, the common theme that resonates is the exposure of the new direction Schvendes are headed, and it’s a damn exciting one. They want you to rhumba – and then have a stiff drink and a good think about what you’ve just done.
Schvendes have spent several years creating, honing, experimenting, challenging and making us all feel something, and still have many chapters to write before they complete their journey. Lay The Noose/Shades Of Grey is the next excerpt to prepare us for the forthcoming full-length from one of Perth’s most intriguing and extraordinary acts.

"In Schvendes the strings; the cathedral shaped and sky bending strings euro;“ are vital. They add meat to stark song skeletons, they beef them up, make them effing huge and fat in the gut. Singer Rachael Dease threw us all onto our backs in a total I've-just-paid-for-dinner-so-let-me-have-my-way; way, barely moving except to grimace on the tense notes, yet completely commanding our attention. We were like, "Ooh! Okay" and went along with it. It was kind of scary, but also kind of sexy" MESS+NOISE
"Their dark country blues now knows where to leave spaces, and that cello goes into your brain, heart, and guts. It sits gently weeping, and counterpointing Rachael's honeyed pain. It has some seductive sexual need to it, and it's transfixing in the way, say, The Devastations can be when they slip an arm around your waist. A cover of the traditional In The Pines is similarly inviting and a little bit dangerous. Ok, a lot dangerous." DRUM SYDNEY

" As always Rachael Dease commanded attention as, at times, she can be both Dorothy and the wicked witch. Schvendes attacked their tunes with plenty of vigour in spite of a stifling evening where lesser bands have been known to wilt. The studious playing of Tristan Parr and the often guttural charm of Dease make them the most obvious focal point of the five-piece, but it is the innocuous guitarist Ant Gray whose impeccable work should never be understated. Having already given the faithful a fabulous festive gift in the form of their faultless Small Mercies, Sweet Graves single, the band added another finely executed performance to their resume." XPRESS MAG
"Schvendes comes across like a female fronted Bad Seeds. Were talking Mr. Cave in his crooning moments here, with the haunting vocals accompanied by the mournful Rhodes piano lines.
Shes Waiting has sinister overtones courtesy of mere guitar strums and PJ Harvey-esque vocals as it undulates from caressing you gently to kicking your sorry arse out on to the street screaming at you to never come back". BEAT MAG
