Sweden has long been regarded as the breeding ground for great metal bands so when you come across a band that’s being labelled as “The future of Swedish Metal”, you sit up and take notice. The band is question that’s had this label and many like it slung in their direction is Scarpoint and once you hear what they’ve got, it all make sense. Hailing for the countries capital, Scarpoint was formed in early 2000 by singer Henrik Englund and guitarist Zoran Kukulj and spent their early years gaining a reputation as the band to watch thanks to their brutally uncompromising live shows. With Erik Thyselius and Chris Goldsmith filling the drums and bass spots respectively, Scarpoint set about recording their debut album The Silence We Deserve, a bombastic blast of melodic death metal that was produced by Daniel Bergstrand (Meshuggah, In Flames fame) and which gain critical acclaim from the metal press worldwide. With tours with the likes of Meshuggah and Soilwork in place, it looked like world domination was well insight until the ill time demise of their then label put pay to the album seeing the light of day. Fast-forward to October 2009 and Scarpoint find themselves back in the studio putting the finishing touches to their 2nd and latest studio album. With Clawfinger mastermind Jocke Skog taking up residence in the producers chair, Scarpoint have amassed an album full of songs that encompass all the finer points of 2003’s A Silence We Deserve yet takes it so so much further. Edgy, brutal, and disturbingly heavy, Scarpoint have managed to raise the bar ten fold on what will be expected from all metal band that follow. One trick pony’s? Hardly. The diversity and musicianship on show is astounding as the band move freely from the relentless barrage of apocalyptic riffage in one song to a dark, moodier, even groovier swagger of another. With an album that’s so rich in texture and enchantingly dynamic yet still relentlessly heavy, Scarpoint are set to breath life into the often stale genre of melodic death metal. You’ve been warned!
