“Sarah’s music speaks to all of us. With a unique voice that will reach into your heart and warm your soul.”
While growing up in Sweden, Sarah Chesler was surrounded by music. Her mother taught her to play piano almost as soon as she could reach the keys, and by age twelve she was writing and performing her own songs. Her influences were many: the hymns sung in her father’s church on Sundays, the American jazz she heard at night on the radio, and the Scandinavian pop bands which were a constant backdrop to her schooldays.
When Sarah left Sweden for America, she became a well-established presence on the local music scene in Connecticut. She soon added guitar to her repertoire, continuing to write in her own inimitable style, while reflecting the music that had meant so much to her as she was growing up.
In recent years, she has further honed her skills working with numerous bands and as a solo artist. Sarah has maintained a busy performance schedule in Connecticut and New York City, playing venues such as Caffe Vivaldi and Googie’s Lounge, as well as the legendary Bitter End in Greenwich Village.
In this last year, Sarah has been recording with a full band for the first time. And now with the release of her latest album “Monday Night Smoker”, we can fully appreciate her dexterity and growth as an artist to be reckoned with. Sarah has perfected the balance between her three instruments: piano, guitar and her mesmerizing, almost haunting, voice. It is a voice that captivates and grabs by the heartstrings. And never more so than when she’s singing any one of the upbeat, pop-inspired songs that have become her trademark. All the tracks but one on this new album are her own compositions: each a snapshot from her life. Themes include the trepidation and joy of returning home after years away, the delight and laughter in a strong and enduring relationship, and the memory of a summer love captured with lilting bossa nova overtones. But perhaps most personal of all, she channels her emotions into a moving tribute to her father, held together by the thread of a rhythmic heartbeat. “House of the Rising Sun” is the one cover song, but to listen to Sarah’s jazz inspired arrangement is like hearing this classic for the first time. Her voice has a deep, mellifluous tone that takes you straight to Bourbon Street.

Sarah describes her music as “alternative pop with jazz influences” and adds, “I don’t know where this musical path is taking me next, but I am definitely enjoying the journey. Whatever happens along the way is a bonus!”
