The Saints Rock Azkena
Vitoria-Gasteiz 2010
June 25th
It is fitting that, on the 10th anniversary of the premier rock festival of Europe, the two bands who ushered in punk rock/new wave – call it what you will - should be appearing on the same stage on the same night at the very venue where Wellington and Napoleon (or his brother) crossed swords.
The Saints and The Damned will grace Friday night at Azkena Rock 2010, on a night when even more monstrous legends will stalk the stage.
The origins of the two bands are not nearly gossiped about as much as their demise, yet they keep turning up like the bad pennies they never chose to be. Governments and armies come and go, but good generals carry on until the good public deposes them.
Still un-deposed, Chris Bailey brings his latest line-up of The Saints to Azkena Rock with all the flair and glory of a regimental rag-tag band of mercenaries. Hungry and war-weary, the band consists of both new recruits and veterans from various campaigns and varied musical regimes.
There will be no King’s shilling for you to swallow, and no easy listening for the converted. Instead you can expect melody, lyrics and loveless romance from one of the last poets of rock ‘n’ roll.
The definition of a true artist lies in defying their art. If something is working for you, then you should break it and make yourself work harder to redefine it. Listen to the songs of The Saints and you will recognize this. Nothing is straight in their house and nothing stays the same.
