Born Dwight Erric Thomas II, the offspring of an art teacher and a us army paratrooper, the lyricist/producer known as Rrice aka Da Golden GRAIN began studying music at the age of six. After being exposed to Hip Hop culture, Rrice originally had his mind set on becoming a b-boy and DJ. "I was amazed by the sounds Jam Master Jay, Grandmaster DST, and other DJ's was creating. I wanted to scratch too, but pops belt kept me from it (belt drive turntable and the belt around his waist).And you already know i was trying to move like them b-boys, RSC, and the cast of breaking. my cousin taught me a few moves."
"I stated writing poetry in high school. Probably like most dudes it was about the ladiesBut it evolved."Shortly after Rrice began writing rap songs under the influence of rappers in his high school. "Man, at the time, it was just the thing to do.but then i kept learning more about the culture.progressing as an artist.before you know it i was in love with something that was intangible."
After graduating high school Rrice briefly attended Syracuse University where he met Jermaine "ManCLEVER" Malone, who founded TEQ 9 Entertainment. The two were both dedicated hiphopers. During his time at Syracuse Rrice ran with a house party crew. "Man, these cats i was running wit threw the illest parties!!!".referring to the dj trio known as SBINC."Me and Spooky.we would run round campus spreading the word to the shorties and a few fellas around campus.hit up Abdos with the fake ID and buy as many Crooked I's as we could carry or holla at some upperclassmen friends that was 21+ and have liquor delivered to their spot.when the party was really jumping me and spooky would kick some drunken freestyles and just party rock."
After purchasing a 4-track recorder Rrice recorded his 1st songs with Man CLEVER, and two rappers from NYC, Apok aka Kid Twitch, and Infinite aka Wonder 8th. Twitch produced the track on an ASR-X-Pro and inspired Rrice to begin making beats."Tiwtch was ill with the beatsvery inspiring.and another key figure that caused me to want to elevate my craft.most cats is usually saying you should quit or you whack, stop trying to rhyme.but i in the cupher i kept.people would give me more constructive criticism that would keep me focused on writing a better rhyme."
By 2000 Rrice had purchased a Roland Dr. Groove and an Roland SP 202 and produced two duly noted songs, Rrice's Capitalist-Ism & ManCLEVER's Who's The Man. Before long Rrice bgan building Beneath The Top Soil Studios piece by piece as a work in progress.
Remincing on his days running throught the party scene with a DJ crew in Syracuse, NY.Rrice proceeded to build his vinyl collection on a weekly basis after re-kindling his love for mixmastery.shortly there after Rrice began rocking the turntables and the mic at friend's parties.
