We like to put things into boxes, and music's no different. We want to know—almost before we listen—what genre it fits into, what artist it sounds like. Not so fast with Rosemary's Garden. In fact, I'd like to posit that they have a sexy, fun, classic rock vibe and sound. Not so easy to pigeonhole, is it?
Singer/songwriter Michael-Louis de Terre is what sets Rosemary's Garden apart: his voice, his songs, his look and the way he performs. A former solo artist, de Terre made the jump to a full band, surrounding himself with equally talented musicians and a collective vision. In 2009, Rosemary's Garden introduced itself to the world with debut release La Musique du Jardin, inspiring one reviewer to proclaim, "The CD is both impressive and brilliant."
For Royal Flush, the band's sophomore offering, de Terre focused more on upbeat pop songs with major chord progressions, a departure from the intense and often dark Jardin. Sonically, Royal Flush is more electric-based, straightforward and easily accessible; lyrically, it's more topical, more transparent. Thematically, the majority of Royal Flush's songs were inspired by Charles Bukowski's Women, referencing women's issues and concerns in the realms of love, sex and relationships.
Although Rosemary's Garden worked with producer/engineer Brian Karscig (Louis XIV) on this release, Royal Flush remains de Terre's vision and production from start to finish. The songs were well rehearsed and road-tested before being recorded live in studio with the full band and vintage gear.
With the release of Royal Flush, Rosemary's Garden is poised to take the world by storm—or at least the Western hemisphere. Extensive touring in the United States throughout 2012 will be accompanied by a tour of Brazil. The band filmed two high-profile videos for the new release with MTV Best Rock Video Director Ricardo Spencer.
Soon Michael-Louis will begin recording Angel School, the 30-song rock opera he penned.
