Our Residency at ZuZu has ended. Thanks to everyone that supported the Night over the last 3.5 years. I'm taking this time to work on some other things but I'll be back soon. In the meantime I'm still available for One-offs and private events. September, 2009

Clashing genres and decades, finesse with dirt and grit, Roots & Razors Night ain’t your average hipster dance party. Punk sing-a-longs spun along side Jamaican & Soul classics are on the menu every Wednesday at ZuZu in Central Square.

The Roots & Razors Soundsystem features DJs Mike Ebner (Krezner) and Steve Beverage (no need for a stage name when your last name is Beverage!) on the tables. Guest DJs usually round out the evening and keep the night fresh and the masses coming. The boys moved their night to ZuZu in April 07 after running the “Drunk Rock Social” at the Druid in Inman Square. Whereas the Druid’s night featured a more “mixed-crowd mix” type of party, Roots & Razors Night pulls no punches; you know exactly what you’re getting into. ZuZu already has the reputation for having stellar DJ nights with a weekly lineup that includes: Jukebox, Cheap Thrills A Go Go, and the legendary Soul-le-lu-jah.

Roots & Razors Night has been best described as “your favorite high school mix tape”. The punk classics that invigorated and influenced the Boston youth in the mid-nineties are given their respect in full force. The Jam, Cock Sparrer, Ramones, and, of course, “The Only Band that Matters”: The Clash share equal time on the turntables. The punk n’ roll side of things usually gets the shots lined up and the night rolling just in time for the dance party. Trojan and Studio One reggae stompers get the tattooed kids swingin’ and skankin’ as sweet soul music from the Altantic and Stax vaults keep their heads held high. Plenty of cuts from Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Wilson Pickett mix with Max Romeo, Toots, and even dancehall favorites Yellowman and Lone Ranger. Hell, even the night’s doorman has been known to thrown down on some of DJ Krezners dub plates.

Quite a few comparisons have been made to such classic nights such as Blackout Bar and Get Smart. Krezner and Beverage are happy to be included in the conversation and hope their efforts can equal the success of those nights. This night has always been about great music and building and strengthening a community. They could care less about what a scene wants or needs to look like. As long as you don’t ask for Emo you’re in.
