Who is Rockwell? Good Question, tough answer. Rockwell is a Soul Rebel, a visionary, a humanitarian, a hustler, a poet, a producer/ songwriter, a musician and above all an ArtistGods Own.
Born in Nigeria, and raised between the UK(london) & the US(NY,Baltimore), Rockwell has a unique outlook on Life due to his transatlantic upbringing and this refects in his music. His mother passed away after the birth of his younger sister and at the tender age of 4. This single event has had the biggest impact on his life even though he feels that "She watches over me as my guardian Angel"
He started out with ambitions of being an actor, from starring in school plays to training with Rufus Orisayomi at the Ritual Arts Theatre in London. However he soon discovered that he had more of an affinity with music after his dad bought him an acoustic guitar." I found solace within the chords of a guitar." He was encouraged to play by his cousin and music teachers so he stuck with it and taught himself to play most instruments by ear.
While he was "imprisoned" (i.e held against his will) in boarding school in Nigeria he heard Hip Hop. If losing his mother had the biggest impact in his life then this had to be in second place. Like others of his generation he felt like "This is ME!!" and he adopted the way of life completely. He started out breakdancing then moved through all its elements until he arrived at MCing.
In the late eighties Rockwell moved to New York to live with his uncle in Brooklyn." I have never seen so many roaches in my life but I loved BK, I felt at home there." That was it, he decided to pursue a career in Music/Entertainment. Rockwell began soaking up everything, sitting in studios and learning his craft. Eventually he moved to Baltimore MD to live with his brother and get an education.Here Rockwell was exposed to the harsh realities of the streets of Bmore.He kept busy writing,producing and doing choreography for and with local acts. Soon he started opening up for big acts such as Kwame,A tribe called Quest and the RZA (then known as prince Raheem).
Unfortunately Rockwell found himself on the wrong side of the law and returned to London in the early nineties. Here he emmersed himself in music, recording, performing,writing and producing with various acts such as ; Dobie(soul2soul),Don-E,Blu-james(basemnt jaxx), NSO,11:59,Mighty Ethnicz,DJ Biznizz to name a few. He Went in and out of record deals,groups,tours and releases throughout most of the nineties until he decided to go for self and set up independently.
Rockwell now runs his own studio,production label, and independent film company. He is currently producing other independent arists and finishing up his debut Album thats been a lifetime in the making.Watch This Space!
