The Past Lives Of Robyn Loau
Pop Princess
Robyn Loau was the teenage lead singer of an Australian all girl pop group Girlfriend whose girl power message preceded the Spice Girls. During this time, Robyns face was plastered on magazine covers across the country and she was often mobbed by fans in shopping centres and airports. Girlfriends debut CD, Make It Come True, sold over 140 000 copies. Upon its release in 1992 the CD became Australias highest selling debut CD (until Silverchairs Frogstomp).
Island Girl
Robyn Loau was the face and voice of the South Pacific project Siva Pacifica. Robyn worked with producer Anthony Copping to arrange a CD, similar to Deep Forests work, capturing the voices of the native island people. After its completion, Robyn travelled the world introducing countries across Europe to the ancient music of the islands. Siva Pacifica was released internationally and found its way into the homes of over 100,000 people.
Film and Television Actress
The feature film Idiot Box introduced Australian (and later US and UK) audiences to the Western Sydney actress Robyn Loau. Directed by David Caesar, Idiot Box drew warm reviews from critics internationally and debuted at number 10 at the Australian Box Office. Robyn played the female lead role of Lani, a drive through bottle shop attendant, alongside actors Ben Mendelsohn and Jeremy Sims. In the late nineties, Robyn Loau also appeared in the Paul Fenech directed film Somewhere in the Darkness. Roles in critically and commercially successful TV dramas such as Wildside and All Saints further cemented a promising acting career.
Debut Solo Artist
Alternative radio station Triple J first introduced Australia to the solo music of Robyn Loau. The captivating sounds of her debut solo single Sick With Love immediately caught the attention of listeners across the country.
Robyns next single Love Addiction (featuring EMF singer James Atkin) continued to cement her reputation as a world-class musician and a few months later Robyns debut CD Malaria received a promotional release within Australia.
Upon hearing Malaria, the Australian media drew comparisons to the likes of Portishead and Neneh Cherry. In a four star review, Rolling Stone Magazine proclaimed Malaria 'A wickedly classy solo debut'.
