".Richard Ruin and his ensemble are primarily gifted thespians, able
to operate in two levels of guiltless subterfuge. Gothic and
Darkwave exists in its own myth. The aesthetics and themes trickle
through deviations of style to unify disparate acts from Diamanda
Galas to Trent Reznor, and tread these murky waters of debasement
and minor chords. Certain keys are required to unlock the full
pleasure of immersion. Once you relinquish objectivity and submit
to the codification and by laws inscribed in the genre enjoyment
flourishes. It requires acing on the part of both audience and stage,
the slipping on of a costume and adoption of proscribed
mannerisms.

The band is one layer of German artist Martin Eder's life as
performance art. It is the sonic equivalent of his flippantly cynical
paintings which marry the pseudo-libertine pornography of
American Apparel and Suicide Girls with the creatively bankrupt
irony permeating hipster culture.

If a movie about demonic possession or vampires required a concert scene Richard Ruin would fit the bill perfectly. Live shows already incorporate actors who crawl across the stage like ghosts flitting unseen through a crowd.
There is dark make-up, negligé, and a sexuality bordering but never truly crossing into fetish. Flickering projections imitating the earliest stag films join the thick ambiance of mood lighting and smoke machines.
Ruin's swarthy voice rings out between
periodic bursts of reverb-drenched chords and church organs, spewing forth tales
of tormented love, the evil within, the dark corners we seek in the safety of fiction.
Should you be able to embrace the style, relax the critical impulses, and let
the dark cabaret wash over you, it should be a fun show."
