ABOUT RICHARD KAPP

Richard Kapp, born 1976, is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, living in the city of Vienna, Austria. He composes, sings and plays his very own quirky but touching music. Some say he sounds a bit like The Divine Comedy, others say Richard reminds them of Rufus Wainwright or Ben Folds.
After all, Richard thinks he sounds like Kapp. His music is always fresh and surprising and you never know what to expect. Living between sarcasm, melancholy and hope, he makes use of all kind of styles without forcing them to come together. He is brave enough to use quirky touches of Jazz, Classical Music fragments or Folk if he thinks that it supports the meaning more than pop can do. Actually, Richard does not give a damn about styles and categories at all. He started to learn piano at the age of six but always refused to learn anything about music theory or scales. That doesn't stop him from composing and arranging his stuff all on his own.
Meanwhile he has a small but cool chamber-pop-ensemble including 2 violas, piano, bass, drums and sometimes a trumpet but truth is that he wishes to play his songs with a huuuuge orchestra, so he tries his best to make his band sound like it is.
A songwriter gathering momentum he has worked with highly respected indie-musicians like Peter Kearns, Tony Cimorosi,
Woodstock Taylor, Gis Johannsson, Bárbara Gilles or
Back Bone Shiver. His debut album "A Tie For Free" has been released 2006, followed up by "*" (or Asterisk) in 2008.
By the end of 2009, Richard has released his third album called "Lunchbox" which has received enthusiastically by his fans.
Richard can be heard regulary on podcasts like NBT but he also has been aired on several radio stations including BBC 6music and the scottish station Radio Six International where he also got nominated for the Record Of The Year 2006.
Richard has been playing lots of gigs in Vienna (Chelsea, B72, Tunnel, Cafe Carina, etc. ), was sharing the stage with David Kitt (IRL), BirdEatsBaby and Joe Black (UK), Bernhard Eder (A), Daniel Seestrand (SE) and many other fantastic songwriters.

REVIEWS

"This is popular art at its very core."
- RedTrackMusic
" Pretty stunning!"
- Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music
" This PianoMan evokes the spirits of the doomed romantic. Rufus Wainwright often tries for this kind of captivating tune, but I think, that Richard Kapp gets it right more often. "
- NBT Radio
"If only more songwriters had this natural talent for melodic art the music world would be a more interesting place"
Jilliane Wright, 2007 at IACMusic
"It's high art and music hall, pop and sarcasm. How does he pack so much stuff into a track without losing it? We've no idea, but it's quite simply brilliant. What fun!"
Gordon Bell, reviewer at Ripping Tracks and producer of Gordon Bell
"Richard Kapp is quite assertive even though he is grounded in David Bowie's electronic influences. Yet, his contributions with Sitting On My Hands and Life Means are attempts by this Austrian songwriter to project a different slant to this genre, which by and large, left its mark on the likes of diverse post-punk European musicians like Philip Boa and Die Krupps."

Love this album!Richard occupies some strange exotic land between the witty whimsicality of The Divine Comedy, the sophisticated musical playfulness of Van Dyke Parkes or early 10cc and the campness of Noel Coward. Its rare to find a keyboard/synth based album that is so warm and human in vibe and spirit, but Richard genuinelly pulls it off. This is a CD brimming with musical and lyrical inventivness, quirks and unexpected delightful twists and turns.Personal highlights for me are the wonderfully charming Divine Comedyesque A Tie For FreeGoodbye Society with its brilliant musical change in the chorus-and the utterly sublime worldwide-hit-that-should-be Light In My RoomLovely
Steve Ison, musician and reviewer at IAC
