This song is a long "gwerz", a type of traditional Breton folk song that emphasizes a tragic or epic historical event.

Celtic culture is oral, not written. In French Brittany (Celtic part of western France), Gwerz songs are used for telling stories (historical or fabled) over time. The first Gwerz is estimated to be song at the 5th century A.D.

This wonderful song is an old traditionnal song extracted from Barzaz Breiz, an old Breton poem collection written in the early 19th by Théodore Hersart de La Villemarqué, who saved that way an essential part of Breton memory and culture.
