Mr. Joel Richards’s stage name – Mr. Radical, was born in St. Vincent & The Grenadines. He grew up in a small Village called La Croix in a ‘single parent’ home. Incidentally, what is known of the meaning of ‘La Croix’ mainly in French, refers to ‘cross’, and if we add a phrase it can also mean ‘kiss goodbye, never to come back’ or ‘write off’. Interesting enough, that however this word is translated, it reflects much of the past of this talented and vibrant young man. In another language – his name Joel means ‘Strong-willed’. A permanent reflection on the future of this talent from the Caribbean.
Joel’s mother Vasilca Richards assumed the role of both parents throughout his childhood and into adulthood. She remains a strong support and her dedication to parenting, gave Joel that desire to always pursue despite situations.
Mr. Radical’s Love for music started from his childhood. It began in school & Church Groups. In 2001 at the age of 21, he was sighted by Mr. Brian Alexander One of St.Vincent Top Soca Producer. Out of this and Ruff Lab Studios, the hit ‘WET’ was created. Years later, Mr. Radical having come into a captive audience, was able to grace the stages of the Caribbean performing alongside some of the best in the music business, names like Elephant man, Mr.Lex, Buju Banton, Crossfire, Junior Reid, Poorsa, Lucky Dubee to name a few.
Within recent times Radical worked with Jamaica 1 Producer Mr. Mikey Bennette where the hits songs Strong black Woman and Wine on Me’ featuring Nicky B are now creating a sensation. Strong Black Woman- inspired by the strength of Joel’s mom.
When asked about the furture Radical says: ‘Jah knows it all, as for me I am rising to reach to the top of my game, the sky is the limit. To his fans he says thanks for the love and support, to all others throughout the world he urges to keep on rising.’
When asked about the choice of name Mr. Radical, by one writer- Joel simply says ‘drastic change’.
Remaining ‘Strong’ – Joel – ‘Mr. Radical’ - Richards
