Patrick "Q" Talev-Karanfilovic has been in the business for four decades. Started when he was 14 as a DJ, got a job in radio at 16, and decided to skip playing drums because he figured out playing drums needed heavy practicing, and he was not that keen on practicing. But the love of music made him decide to dedicate all time to being a radio DJ. At 20 moved to Denmark to finish architectural studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, from which he graduated in '75. Through the job as a DJ and critic for a magazine, He was assigned to interview an opening act for Santana. The name of the act was Earth, Wind & Fire. The friendships with two of the members, Al McKay and Ralph Johnson, have been maintained ever since, both privately and in his work as a producer. It was Al McKay who dragged Q into production from his lighting design and DJ-ing background. McKay said that Q had a perfect ear for mixing and an amazing instinct for getting the right songs and right people together. In the 80s, Q met Nathan East; while working next door with Al McKay on project, Nathan was recording with Anita Baker. A young man was going in and out the door at the time, and his name was Marcel East. He was introduced to Q by Ralph Johnson as his writing partner. Much later, in the mid-90s, Marcel and Q met up at MIDEM, and ever since have worked together. They formed a record company together, Alliance Records, Inc. In 2000 Marcel was producing Fourplay’s Grammy-nominated album "Yes Please," and Q was lucky enough to be one of the engineers on the tune “A Little Fourplay.” While working, Nathan East started calling him “Q” and the name has stuck. If you want to know why "Q," you'd better ask N8an.
