Over the last few months playfield have gone through quite a renaissance and have expanded their sound, learnt new skills, obtained new gear and even found a new drummer. Zach Carlson is now playfield’s new drummer, joining original members, Alex Skipper on Lead Guitar and Simon Skipper on Bass.

playfield are a progressive metal band from the Northern Beaches. They are currently writing songs for their new concept EP, Lunar & Solar.

Each member brings their own unique characteristic to the bands dynamics. Alex is a studious guitar player known for practicing hours on end, leading to a very virtuosic guitar style consisting of technical playing. Simon invokes a defined low end using his 5-string basses, presenting an energetic live presence with head banging and “bass shred”. Zach has a great love for experimental music, his drum kit is constantly expanding, currently having 12 toms providing a melodic rhythmic sound.

playfield are known for their energetic live performance. You can be guaranteed each performance is completely unique to the next, as they like to keep their audience enthralled by spontaneous improvisations and extended solos, anywhere from jazz licks to metal shredding, audience participation and their virtuosic playing. On rare occasions, during the middle of a song, playfield have been known to all swap instruments while still keeping the song going. Sometimes playfield will perform covers from different genres and arrange them to suit their style.

For musicians so young, they are well on the way to becoming a successful band with growing support from loyal fans. They have received many gigs and have played at exclusive events such as the Royal Easter Show (2006). They were also offered to open for the popular Australian rock band, The Butterfly Effect, but unfortunately had to decline due to prior commitments. playfield were also asked to be the first band to play at The Star of the Sea Theatre in Manly.

Additionally in 2006 playfield released a 5 track EP which runs for a total time of 27:10 and contains a four-page booklet with photos and information about playfield inside.
