"With an angelic voice and an obvious knack for deeper lyrical meaning, Drysdale proved to be a sweeter slice of Fiona's Apple." Drum Media

"Wincingly honest, her guileless insights are part of her charm, as are her warm-throated vocals and astute self-awareness." Sydney Morning Herald

"Pippa Drysdale, peripatetic poetess and perceptive observer of Daily Life" reAKT magazine

"become entranced by these simple melodies and very direct and acute observations on love and life." Groove Magazine

Pippa Drysdale is a folk-pop artist who writes the kind of songs that reach into your chest and flick your soul. Disarmingly personal, poignant and little left of centre, her music has been described by the Sydney Morning Herald as “wincingly honest”, by Groove magazine as "entrancing" and by Drum Media as "a sweeter slice of Fiona’s Apple". We'd love to tell you were she was from, but we're not really sure - born in South Africa and raised somewhere between Australia and Zimbabwe, it seems that she did most of her growing up on aeroplanes.

She has been likened to Suzanne Vega, Natalie Merchant, Jewel and Joni Mitchell - but then she's also been likened to a good bottle of scotch, so comparisons can really only go so far. She has played shows in New York, London, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth and appeared on numerous radio stations live.

This year (in 2009) she is booked to play the Kintyre Songwriters Festival in Scotland, Bramfest Festival in Hertford, Paddle around the Pier in Brighton, The Aylesbury Festival in Aylesbury and the Beachdown Festival in Brighton.

But back to the story of how she came about.Pippa first began writing songs during a two year stay in New York. She was housebound, so taught herself guitar via the internet. She then returned to Australia where she made her first two releases in a friend’s apartment, initially just so that she’d have something to sell to people at her shows. However, they ended up selling all over Europe (Holland, France, Scotland, Ireland, England, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, and Switzerland), the States (New York, California, Philadelphia, Oregon, Indiana), Africa, Japan and Canada via the internet. They also earned her a nomination for the WAM song of the year competition, got her some airplay and won her some nice reviews. She played the main stage at The Nannup Music Festival in 2006, the WAMi festival in 2006 and 2007 and was booked to play the main stage at Peats Ridge Music Festival in 2007 (until it was cancelled due to flooding). In 2007 her song "Calamine Lotion Boy" was voted number one on Australia's Triple J unearthed roots chart for 3 consecutive weeks and in 2008, she played London's City Showcase Festival.

All this led Pippa to want to make a “studio” record. So, after meeting with the very talented Michael Carpenter and Matt Fell at Love Hz studios in Sydney, she spent eleven days with them recording eleven songs. One of these songs, "Trick of Destiny", was short-listed for the ASA song competition.

Pippa now lives in London where she's playing gigs and festivals regularly, both in London and in surrounding areas. In August 2009, she will officially launch “Fire in the Snow” in the UK.

The less official version:

I love music. When I was two months old, the only thing that would put me to sleep was Jackson Browne or The Eagles. These days music does the opposite thing - it takes all my attention. I can't even hold a conversation if there's a song playing that I like. This gets me into quite a lot of trouble : ) I also love lyrics, which is probably kind of obvious when you listen to my songs. My music has been likened to that of Natalie Merchant, Suzanne Vega, Fiona Apple and Jewel. I have lived all over the place (Zimbabwe, South Africa, Melbourne, Perth and New York) and currently live in London.I play lots of gigs and festivals and have just finished my first "studio" album. It's called "Fire in the Snow" and you can hear some tracks from it on this page. I'll be launching it in the UK in August 2009. In the meantime, you can also get songs from my other two home-made albums at iTunes if you're looking for them.also make sure to check back here again soon, I'll be giving away a free single or two in the coming months.
